Top 10 Tips for Online Job Hunting

Published in online job huntingjob search tipsjob search onlinejob search methodshow to search jobs by jamestomerson

With the advent of online job hunting, job searches have been quite easier and quicker. When you are hunting for jobs on the internet, you come across hundreds of vacancies. To save yourself time and to make your job searching efforts targeted, you need to be smart. Given below are 10 most important tips for hunting jobs online and become a smart jobseeker.

1. Check the vacancy deadline
Though there are multiple sites that remove job vacancies as soon as they are outdated, there are a number of others sites that leave vacancies for long even after the dates of applying have been passed. Therefore, a smart jobseeker would double-check the dates of the job vacancies advertised online. It is no use applying for jobs where the positions have already been filled up.

2. Go through the terms and conditions
There are hundreds of websites posting job vacancies online. But, it is essential to verify whether the job site you are submitting your CV to is a legitimate one. Go through the ‘Terms and Conditions' and the ‘About Us' section of such online recruitment site and only then become a subscriber and submit your resume. Sites that are legitimate maintain a database of all the resumes submitted so employers may find a appropriate candidates when they plan to hire.

3. Think laterally and out of the box
Do not limit your online job search options. Opportunities sometimes wait in places where you least expect them. Also browse for job opportunities in related categories. Try searching by using alternative job titles and broaden the range of geographical location for your job hunt.

4. Be careful not to fall prey to false job opportunities
It is true that there are some sites that overplay job vacancies again and again. These recruitment sites just want more and more candidates to sign up. So, before you actually submit your personal information, check the legitimacy of the job site you are subscribing to and keep away from applying to false job opportunities online.

5. Make yourself available out there
All of the job vacancies are not advertised, which is known to almost all jobseekers. So, how do find or make yourself available to get hired for jobs which are unadvertised. You can do so by putting yourself out there via professional networking. Business networking sites like LinkedIn and Spoke are perfect options to connect to professionals online and to market your talents and skills.

6. Do not spam while hunting/ applying for jobs
Do not run after quantity while submitting online applications. Yes, you can apply online for as many jobs as possible on the same day. However, you need to think in terms of quality and not quantity. Employers are always on the look out for appropriate and matching talents. Therefore, you applications should match the requirements of the employer.

7. Draft your job applications offline
While hunting for jobs and submitting applications, candidates need to draft their job applications offline, so they may run a spell-check through the text and save a copy offline. Online application requirements or registration procedures vary from one recruitment website to another. Because, if you do it all online and you are not able to save the copy online, you will lose all the submitted information, filling out the information all over again. It is, therefore, advisable to draft your applications offline.

8. Don't become lost
While applying for jobs online or hunting for jobs, you may sometimes feel that you are submitting the information which may not be visible. To ensure that your submitted information is received, you can always send an email to the recruitment site confirming the receipt of your CV or resume.

9. Keep an eye on your job alerts
How would you like to see your inbox clogged up with unwanted job alerts? So, when you subscribe for job alerts on recruitment sites, also keep an eye on your alerts. See if the job alerts you subscribed to are being sent to you on a regular basis or are you not receiving any alerts at all? If you find yourself receiving unwanted alerts from a job site, simply unsubscribe.

10. Go retro!
Do not only depend on hunting jobs online. To increase your chances of landing jobs, you need to broaden your search. Traditional methods of searching for jobs are no less effective. Whether it is trade journals, newspapers or other similar sources, you need to make use of them all.
