According to a study conducted by the CDC's National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, around 40% of Americans are extremely stressed at work. That means work stress level is very high in America. And this is unfortunate that stressful working conditions have a great impact on people's health. High stress in the workplace can lead to health consequences including colds, flu, heart diseases and metabolic syndrome among others.

It is almost impossible to find a less stressful job, as businesses continue to become more and more competitive. What should we do under these circumstances? All we can do is adopt some important strategies that can help us reduce the work load.

Given below are some of the most effective strategies to handle stress at work.

Start Off Your Day the Right Way
Stressful mornings make us more stressed. Getting kids off to school and combating dodging traffic in the morning cause a lot of stress. And then we hurriedly gulp down a cup of coffee rather than taking a health drink. Therefore, it is very important to start off the day in the right way. Appropriate nutrition, some advance planning and a positive attitude can prove to be very effective in reducing work stress.

Understand Requirements Clearly
Most of the time, we get stressed at work because we are not entirely clear about what's expected of us. Understanding the requirements clearly can help us a lot in controlling our stress level. Plan an effective strategy to prioritize things. In the workplace, you can also get in touch with your supervisor to be very clear about what they expect of you. Such strategies can relieve a lot of stress that can drain the energy out of us.

Avoid Conflicts
Interpersonal conflicts can greatly impact our physical and emotional health. Though conflicting issues are bound to arise among co-workers, the best strategy is to avoid conflicts as much as you can. To stay away from conflicts, you need to put a limit to gossiping and sharing your personal viewpoints with your colleagues and co-workers. Don't get into discussions related to religion or politics, as they can lead to conflicting situations. If you come across people who are not getting along well with others, it is a good idea to stay away from such people.

Use Your Organizational Skills
One of the most effective strategies to reduce work stress is to stay organized. Staying organized means you need to manage your time efficiently. Always plan ahead of time. To manage your time, you need to be aware of the potential time-waters. Time management skills can be useful to make yourself more efficient and productive, thereby reducing the stress in the workplace.

Ensure Physical Comfort
Many times, physical discomfort will lead to a lot of stress. While in the workplace, ensure that you sit in comfortable chair. Make sure that the workspace is a quiet place. Even office noise can leave you stressed on the job. When you are working, it is important that there is no physical discomfort.

Take Short Walks at Lunch
A lot of workplace stress is caused because people live a sedentary lifestyle. Short exercise breaks or walks at lunch can be useful to uplift your mood. Short exercise breaks throughout the day can be even more effective to control your stress level.

Control Your Perfectionism Level
There is a big difference being a high achiever and a perfectionist. Being an achiever will lead you to work excellence. However, lots of perfectionism can drive people nuts. In today's fast paced work environment, it may not always be possible to do everything perfectly. Therefore, it is good advice to examine your perfectionism level and keep it in check. You can also work out some effective strategies to overcome perfectionism.

Following the above mentioned strategies can help you immensely to reduce work stress. Learn how to management time efficiently and use your organizational skills to plan things ahead of time. Some advance planning will potentially reduce your work stress.
