Laboratory Technician, BiologyDepartment: Biology - W & SLocation: Westshore Campus Reports To: Laboratory Manager, Biology Recruitment Type: External/Internal Requisition ID: req6517 Employment Type: Part-Time Support Staff Union Position: Union Work Schedule: M-Sat,8-4:30 with occasional shift 2 hours.Number of Openings: 1 Job Description: SUMMARYThe Laboratory Technician I is responsible for preparing the laboratoryclassrooms and demonstrations in accordance to lesson plans, assisting in thetroubleshooting of equipment and software to meet the needs of the lesson planand appropriate clean up after the lesson has concluded. Ultimately, ensuringthe laboratory is secured, equipment is cleaned, maintained and storedproperly. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESPrepares classroom laboratory workstations with the necessary materials and apparatus to perform experiments Sets up and prepares experiments and demonstrations for classroom use Arranges supplies and equipment as laboratory requirements changeMaintains and cleans the laboratory, stockroom, equipment and glasswareFills tubes, bottles and containers with specified solutions/materials and applies identification labelsProperly disposes of laboratory waste materialsAssists faculty in the laboratory; sometimes during educational sessions, by providing technical troubleshooting supportPerforms minor repairs and maintenance of laboratory equipment and toolsAssists faculty with the development and implementation of new laboratory procedures and/or curriculaSecures laboratory areaAssists with annual inventoryMay record and monitors expenditures and charges relevant to laboratory operationMay functionally supervise Work Study Students, Student Assistants and Part Time Lab Technicians in the labPrepares, maintains and monitors supplies and equipment inventoryAssists Lab Supervisor in ordering, receiving and storing suppliesPerforms other related duties as assignedScience Laboratory Technicians may Maintain living plants and animals (i.e. rodents)REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATIONAND EXPERIENCE/TRAININGHigh School degree or GEDMinimum of two years of experience:Science Laboratory Technicians: these two years must be in a laboratory-based Science (Biology, MLT, Chemistry, Physics, or other equivalent in Health Careers and SciencesBasic computer skills, math and grammarStrong attention to detail and accuracyExcellent verbal, written and verbal communication skills; Ability to write routine reports and correspondenceKNOWLEDGE,SKILLS and ABILITIESAbility to read and interpret documents including: Safety Data Sheets (SDS), safety rules and processes, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manualsAbility to determine needs and identify solutionsAbility to exercise good judgment and discretion in the performance of regular workPossess working knowledge of laboratory concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to apply in varied situations as it pertains to the departmental focusPossess strong attention to detail and accuracyPossess strong organizational and time-management skillsAbility to write routine reports, protocols, and correspondencePossess sensitivity to respond appropriately to the needs of the communityExperience with data collection and diagnostic software/equipment; for example:Science Laboratory Technicians: Vernier, Pasco and iWorx equipmentAutomotive Laboratory Technician: ODB scannersAbility to exercise good judgment and discretion in the performance of regular workPossess working knowledge of laboratory concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to apply in varied situations as it pertains to the departmental focusPossess strong attention to detail and accuracyPossess strong organizational and time-management skillsAbility to write routine reports, protocols, and correspondencePossess sensitivity to respond appropriately to the needs of the communityPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATIONAND EXPERIENCE/TRAININGAssociate's degreeCOMPETENCIESCRITICALCOMPETENCIESService FocusQuality of WorkCommunicationVERYIMPORTANT COMPETENCIESTime Utilization AdaptabilityIMPORTANT COMPETENCIESCollaborationContinuous ImprovementPHYSICALDEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS(The demandsdescribed here are representative of those that must be met by an employee tosuccessfully perform the essential functions of this job.
