Project Accountant

Position Summary We're seeking a Project Accountant to join a well-established mechanical and plumbing contractor throughout the Glen Gardner/Hampton, NJ. This role supports project managers and leadership by overseeing job cost accounting, billing, and day-to-day financial operations across commercial plumbing, HVAC, and service projects. Key Responsibilities • Manage job cost tracking and maintain accurate project budgets and cost reports • Prepare and process AIA, progress, and time & materials billings • Review and process subcontractor and vendor invoices, lien waivers, and payment applications • Support accounts payable and accounts receivable functions • Maintain WIP schedules, cost forecasts, and profitability reporting • Reconcile job costs, credit cards, and bank statements • Assist with project setup, contract documentation, and project close-outs • Support payroll coordination, 1099s, and compliance reporting • Maintain organized financial records for audits and internal reporting • Collaborate daily with project managers, field teams, and leadership Qualifications • 3-5+ years of accounting experience within construction, mechanical, plumbing, or contractor environments • Strong understanding of job costing, project billing, and WIP reporting • Experience supporting multiple concurrent projects • Comfortable working directly with operations and field teams • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred • Excel proficiency required (pivot tables, lookups, reconciliations, reporting) • Experience with QuickBooks, Procore, or similar construction accounting systems preferred Compensation & Benefits • Competitive salary based on experience • Medical, dental, and vision benefits • 401(k) with employer match • Paid time off and holidays • Stable pipeline of local projects and long-term growth potential
