POSITION OPEN UNTIL FILLED Serves as the School Certifying Official (SCO), responsible for processing and certifying federal and state educational benefits for active-duty service members, veterans, and military dependents. Provides administrative support to the Assistant Director while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and delivering high-quality service to student veterans and their families. Requires three or more years of experience in financial aid or higher education, preferably at a community college.This position receives general direction from the Assistant Director of Financial Aid and exercises no supervision. NOTE: This is a security sensitive position and an appropriate background investigation will be made on applicants being strongly considered for this position. SELECTION CRITERIA: The cover letter should address how the following knowledge, skills, and abilities were acquired: Knowledge of: 1. Federal and state veterans' education benefits, including U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) policies, eligibility requirements, certification procedures, and reporting requirements; 2. Students' rights, responsibilities, and obligations related to financial aid and veterans' education benefits; 3. Enrollment certification processes, documentation standards, and recordkeeping requirements for veteran and military-connected students; 4. Services, enrollment procedures, and support programs for disabled veterans, including Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E); 5. Academic advising principles, student support resources, and services available to veteran and military-affiliated students; 6. Higher education policies, procedures, and student services within a community college environment; 7. Modern office practices, administrative procedures, and the use of microcomputer applications and standard office software; 8. Effective customer service and public relations practices when assisting diverse student populations; Skills in: 9. Organizing, prioritizing, and managing multiple tasks with strong attention to detail and accuracy; 10. Providing guidance and support to veteran and military-connected students regarding available education benefits and resources; 11. Interpreting and applying federal and state regulations related to veterans' education programs; 12. Maintaining accurate records and preparing reports to ensure compliance with regulatory and audit requirements; 13. Communicating clearly and professionally in both written and verbal formats; Ability to: 14. Read, understand, interpret, and apply technical, regulatory, and government documents related to financial aid and veterans' education benefits; 15. Perform tasks associated with the certification and processing of veteran educational benefits in accordance with VA guidelines; 16. Effectively assist students and resolve issues in complex or sensitive situations; 17. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and external agencies; 18. Work independently and collaboratively while managing multiple responsibilities with accuracy and attention to detail; 19. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and work-related information in accordance with applicable regulations; 20. Provide caring, high-quality service by creating welcoming experiences, communicating clearly and proactively, addressing needs with professionalism and empathy, and ensuring individuals are thoughtfully connected to appropriate resources. WORKING CONDITIONS: Minimal Hazard/Exposure-Standard office setting. At least minimal environmental controls are in place to assure health and comfort. Sedentary-Desk work; occasional field trips e.g. for college or program activities.
