Position Description The Maintenance of Way (MOW) Track Worker-level employees are responsible for performing a variety of physically demanding tasks involved in the construction, repair, and maintenance of railroad tracks and associated infrastructure. MOW Track Workers receive daily instructions of jobs and tasks from the job Foreman and Superintendent. Working as a team they install and replaces railroad ties, rails, track material and components, and ballast while ensuring the proper alignment and safety of the rail system. The job requires the use of both hand tools and power equipment to accomplish tasks. Workers may also assist in the operation of heavy machinery to complete various construction and maintenance tasks. This role involves outdoor work in all weather conditions and often requires travel to remote job sites. Strict adherence to safety procedures and company regulations is essential, as the work is performed in potentially hazardous environments. The position demands physical strength, endurance, and the ability to lift heavy materials, bend, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods. A high school diploma or equivalent is typically preferred, though not always required. Previous experience in construction or railroad maintenance is beneficial but not mandatory. Strong teamwork, communication skills, and the ability to follow detailed instructions are critical for success in this position. MOW Track Workers play a key role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of the rail transportation network and must be willing to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays when necessary. Position Requirements Qualifications:Ability to adhere to all safety related rules and regulations Ability to perform continuous physical tasks for long periods of time Familiarity with hand tools and proper use Pervious construction experience and/or training preferred Ability to follow instructions and learn on the job Strong desire to be apart of a team operating in a fast-paced, result-oriented culture Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and E-Railsafe criminial background check Valid drivers license and clean driving record required, CDL or ability to obtain is a plus Participate in client specific trainings and annual refreshers to obtain necessary credentials to perform work on their sites Complete MSHA Part 48 New Miner Training and annual refresher training Education, Training, and Experience:High school diploma or GED (preferred but not always required) Basic math and reading comprehension skills Vocational training or coursework in construction (a plus, not mandatory) On-the-job training provided by employer Safety training provided by the company, including: CN On-Track Safety Training Mine Safety and Health New Miner (MSHA) Proper use of hand and power tools Site-specific orientation and hazard awareness No railroad specific prior experience required; willingness to learn and perform manual labor is key Experience in physical or outdoor labor (e.g., landscaping, warehouse work) is a plus Familiarity with construction tools and equipment is helpful but not mandatory Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team Demonstrated reliability and strong work ethic in previous roles (if applicable) Physical Work Activities:Manual handling and lifting: Lifting and carrying heavy tools, materials, and track components Repetitive bending, squatting, and twisting Tool use and operation: Operating hand tools (spike mauls, hammers, wrenches, shovels, etc) Using power tools (impact wrenches, grinders, saws, etc) Hanling hydraulic or pneumatic equipment (spike drivers, spike pullers, rail drills, etc) Track work tasks: Installing, removing, and aligning rails and ties Driving spikes and fasteners into railroad ties Shoveling ballast and tamping track Cutting and welding rail sections Installation of various railroad material and components Removal of dirt, rock, debris, ice, snow and other material to clean track Walking and standing: Walking long distances on uneven, rocky or sloped surfaces (ballast, gravel) Standing for extended periods of time during Climbing and balancing: Climbing onto equipment or embankments Maintaining balance while work on or near equipment Working with or around machinery: Working near or next to, assisting with, or observing the operation of heavy equipment and machinery Environmental Exposures:Weather Extremes: Working outdoors in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow) Risk of sun exposure Risk of extreme cold exposure Noise and vibration: Exposure to high noise levels from work activities, tools, engines, and machinery Vibration from hand tools and mobile equipment Dust and fumes: Inhalation of dust from ballast or worksite activity Exposure to exhaust fumes from machinery or welding operations Chemical exposure: Contact with lubricants, fuels, solvents, or creosote-treated wood.
