Culinary Operations Specialists (COSs) play an essential role in operating and managing Navy dining facilities and living quarters to support Navy personnel. In this dynamic position, you will prepare diverse menus, manage food inventories, and maintain financial documentation. The dining areas aboard ships, known as the 'mess decks,' are often considered the heart of the ship, making your contributions vital to boosting morale across the crew. COSs are needed on every ship and shore base within the Navy and provide high-quality food service catering for admirals and senior government officials, including operating the White House Mess for the President of the United States. Key Responsibilities: As a Culinary Operations Specialist, your tasks will include: Preparing menus and sourcing the necessary quantities and types of food items for meal preparation. Operating kitchen and dining facilities efficiently. Maintaining food inventories and accurate financial records. Serving as personal food service specialists in commanding officers' and admirals' messes. Managing shipboard living accommodations and hotel-type quarters on shore installations. Contributing as a flight attendant aircrew member when required. Work Environment: As a Culinary Operations Specialist, you'll work in innovative kitchens, bustling dining areas, comfortable living quarters, and organized food service storerooms on ships and shore bases. This role is both physically and mentally demanding, requiring collaboration and teamwork. Training & Career Advancement: After completing Recruit Training, COSs will attend a comprehensive seven-week training program in Fort Lee, VA, where you'll gain skills in food preparation, nutrition, and dining services. Advancement opportunities are readily available for qualified applicants, with additional technical and operational training possibilities as your career progresses. Educational Opportunities: Culinary Operations Specialists can earn college credits through various programs for courses taken in this role. The United States Naval Community College offers degree programs, including a Naval Studies Certificate, contributing to an associate degree. These educational initiatives are designed to support professional development. COSs may also utilize programs such as the Navy College Program, Tuition Assistance, and the Post-9/11 GI Bill to further their education while serving. Qualifications & Requirements: To become a Culinary Operations Specialist, you should: Be a motivated team player with a passion for working with others. Have strong arithmetic and verbal skills, creativity, and an interest in nutrition and culinary arts. Be detail-oriented, capable of following instructions, and maintaining precise records. This position requires military service with a contract as a commissioned officer in the Navy.
