City of Springfield is seeking applicants for Chemist I Department: Office of Public Utilities Division: Supt Technical Services Work Location: CWLP DALLMAN SPRINGFIELD, Illinois, 62701 United States Work Hours: Monday - Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm with rotating half-day weekend coverage Starting Rate: $25/hour Eligibility Requirements: Open to All Applicants Union: IAMAW Chemist Final Date to Apply: 4/17/2026 Primary Duties and Responsibilities: * Receive and execute general instructions from supervision to ensure efficient, economical, and safe operation of the generating facility. * Conduct boiler and condenser inspections to evaluate water treatment effectiveness. * Perform and interpret chemical and process analyses, including FGD, wastewater, fuel, byproduct, limestone, and residual materials. * Recommend chemical treatment adjustments for boiler and circulating water systems based on analytical results and assist operations in identifying real-time deficiencies. * Support the development and continuous improvement of laboratory methods and procedures. Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have the equivalent completion of four years of college with coursework in chemistry or chemical engineering, at least two years responsible experience in the practice of analytical chemistry, including the operation and calibration of all laboratory and power plant analytical instrumentation and chemical cleaning of boilers, a valid Class D driver's license, and an awareness of environmental and job site conditions, with the ability to work at heights and in confined spaces. Preference for employment in all positions with the city shall be given to applicants who are full-time city residents.
