This position is funded through either department funds or Federal Work Study (FWS) funds. Students who are not eligible for FWS are still encouraged to apply, as department funding may be available.Manager: Logan HaakLocation: Elmen CenterHours: around 8 hours per weekPosition Duration: Academic YearPURPOSE OF JOB:The purpose of this position is to supervise the Elmen Center Weight Room. The weight room supervisor is responsible for enforcing weight room policies, cleaning and maintaining equipment, ensuring the safety of lifters through proper spotting, assisting users in exercise program development, and promoting the Recreational Services department, programs, and mission. SPECIAL SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, and TRAINING REQUIRED FOR JOB:The weight room supervisor must posses strong people skills, conflict resolution skills, enthusiasm, and assertiveness. Other specific skills that would be beneficial include an understanding of exercise and weight training program principles, knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, and an understanding of various pieces of weight room equipment. Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications are preferred. SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:Administrative:The weight room supervisor will be expected to: Attend monthly position training sessions, and other meetings as needed and indicated by the Director of Recreational Services.Be accountable for hour's assigned, approving substitutions with the recreation coordinator and team leader.Arrive 15 minutes early for assigned shifts. Be prepared to stay until all necessary job responsibilities are completed at the end of a shift.Accurately and thoroughly complete the appropriate weight room supervisor checklists during each shift.Adhere to and enforce all weight room policies. Emergency:The weight room supervisor will be aware of all emergency procedures for the recreation facility and be prepared to:Observe regular fire and tornado procedures, including evacuating the building or directing people to the appropriate location inside the building.Respond to, and manage appropriately according to the emergency plan, any injury, rescue situation, and/or blood spill.Know emergency numbers and immediately make use of these numbers when emergency situations arise (Campus Safety #4014, Police/Fire #9-911).Notify the Director of Recreational Services and Building Supervisor of unusual circumstances which may involve the Physical Plant, such as heat, air conditioning, plumbing, lights, pool problems, and power surges. Security:The weight room supervisor will:Close and lock the weight room at the end of a designated shift. Be sure the weight room is empty, secure, and doors locked before leaving at the end of a closing shift. Collect an ID card from each patron using the weight room and verify the ID to ensure safety and monitor usage according to department policy.Ensure that equipment and towels are kept in condition and properly inventoried according to department policy. Supervisory/Leadership:The weight room supervisor will adhere to the following guidelines:Promote Recreational Services programs and facilities.Motivate and encourage weight room users to accomplish their respective exercise goals and programs. Maintain a safe environment for all weight room users.Create a positive fitness atmosphere/environment that enhances wow experiences.Passionate about their purpose and role as a weight room supervisor, and display a servant heart.ProtocolThe weight room supervisor will adhere to the following guidelines:Wear appropriate staff attire-staff shirt, and closed toe shoes.Use professional phone courtesy.Do not make or receive personal phone calls while on duty. Does not study or exercise while on duty.Maintain a professionalism that adheres to the Recreational Services department Mission and Values.Relationship with Student Employment Supervisor (who student will report to):The weight room supervisor will report to the Building Supervisor, Recreation Coordinators, and the Director of Recreational Services.Miscellaneous:The weight room supervisor will follow the specific position job responsibilities as outlined in the weight room manual. Method of Evaluation:The weight room supervisor will be evaluated on a formal basis 1 to 2 times each year by the recreation coordinator. This evaluation will involve a written evaluation by the recreation coordinator, as well as a self-evaluation filled out by the weight room supervisor. The weight room supervisor will be periodically evaluated by the Building Supervisor and their respective Team Leader. This will include a written evaluation by the Building Supervisor or Team Leader, and will be covered verbally.
