Salary and Benefits The annual base salary for new agents starts at $51,632 and can go up to $92,219 based on your grade level (GL-5/GL-7). Exciting Recruitment Incentives Newly appointed agents can benefit from up to $20,000 in recruitment incentives, with $10,000 payable upon completion of the Border Patrol Academy and the remaining $10,000 awarded for locations of particular priority. Retention Incentives Available Moreover, you may qualify for additional retention incentives totaling up to $40,000 during your first four years. Potential Work Locations Available duty assignments may include various locations critical to our operations. Please keep in mind that your assigned location may not always match your preferences, as assignments are based on operational needs. Duty locations can influence pay rates, and some federal law enforcement positions may offer higher locality pay. Once fully trained, you could also be eligible for an additional increase of 25% of base pay through the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This career ladder position guides you through grades GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12, with eligibility to advance after 52 weeks in each grade. Key Responsibilities As a Border Patrol Agent, your contributions are vital in securing our borders, preventing unlawful actions, and strengthening our nation's economy. Your responsibilities will include: Identifying and questioning individuals suspected of immigration violations and reviewing relevant documentation. Apprehending undocumented individuals and smugglers using surveillance techniques, including night operations with infrared scopes. Tracking evidence of illegal entries and performing checks in diverse environments. Conducting patrols along national borders and coastal regions using various government assets such as vehicles, horses, and ATVs. Qualifications To qualify for the GL-5 grade level, you will need: One year of general work experience showcasing decision-making skills, stress management, and information-gathering abilities. A bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited institution can also satisfy this requirement. A combination of relevant work experience and education may qualify you as well. For GL-7 candidates, you will need: One year of specialized work experience that demonstrates your judgment in law enforcement situations. A bachelor's degree with superior academic performance or relevant graduate studies may substitute for the required experience. A combination of experience and education is acceptable. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must be U.S. citizens, have primary residency in the U.S. for at least three of the last five years, and be under 40 years of age at the time of application, in line with law enforcement retirement policies.
