We strive to represent our community in our teammates, as we know that diverse and inclusive teams are more innovative, and have an empowering impact on the work, progress and culture of our community.It takes us all working together.Applications will close on March 11, 2026Nature of WorkThis is an hourly position, limited to working less than 67 days per year which will be utilized, as needed, to conduct thorough and objective pre-employment background investigations for all candidates of the Rochester Police Department to determine their suitability for employment.WORK SCHEDULEThis position will be scheduled "as needed" and scheduled days and times may vary dependent upon workload and departmental hiring.PAY RATE$43.71 per hourPursuant to MN Statute, part-time, temporary, seasonal assignments are limited to 67 working days per calendar year.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe work below is representative of the scope of work performed within this job classification. Individual job duties will vary based on work assignment or location. Conduct thorough and objective pre-employment background investigations to determine a candidate's suitability for employment. Review and summarize documents regarding an applicant's work history, criminal history, financial/credit history, and personal and professional references. Interview candidates, family, friends, acquaintances and previous employers as well as both cooperative and reluctant references. Develop leads and additional references for corroborative or contradictory information. Gather and review factual, confidential and open-source documents and data related to candidates. Keep detailed and comprehensive notes on assigned investigations. Partner with law enforcement organizations, courts, educational institutions and other businesses to complete background investigations. Access and utilize information from restricted and confidential data bases in accordance with city policy, state guidelines and state statute. Participate in training and certification related to background investigations, use of government databases and data privacy statutes. Compile and prepare summary reports using template formats. Compile and prepare detailed, comprehensive reports that articulate the correlation between qualifying/disqualifying information and a candidate's suitability for employment. Perform others duties as assigned or necessary. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation and ExperienceIn order to be considered for this position, applicants must possess one of the following: High School graduate or equivalent and two years of post-secondary education in criminal justice, social work, human resources, paralegal or a related field. Two years of work experience as Police Sergeant, or higher, for a law enforcement agency. Four years fulltime employment experience as a licensed Peace Officer by the Minnesota Peace Officers Standards and Training Board (POST Board). Experience performing pre-employment applicant investigative work for a governmental or contract investigative agency. Licenses and CertificationsValid Driver's LicenseAdditional RequirementsCandidates must: Be at least 21 years of age. Not have any convictions for crimes that would prohibit licensure as a Peace Officer. See MN Stat 626.87 and MN RULES 6700.0700. Have reliable transportation (mileage will be reimbursed). Have your own personal computer with appropriate anti-virus and security software.
