TITLE: ESOL Instructor (Part Time, Adjunct) - Portland Adult Education POSITION OVERIVEW: Portland Adult Education (PAE) seeks a knowledgeable, experienced, reliable, and team-oriented part-time ESOL Instructor for a remote course starting in January 2026. While this is an online course, occasional classes meet in person, and applicants need to be local to Portland, Maine. PAE adjunct instructors are hired on a temporary, part-time, hourly basis. Classes run on a trimester basis from September to June each year. Students in ESOL classes are English Language Learners who are working to improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills to support their career, academic, and community goals. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Plan lessons based on a provided textbook and course outline Provide rigorous instruction that builds students' content knowledge and language skills Assess and evaluate student work Maintain high expectations and standards while providing scaffolds for students who may struggle with the content Communicate effectively with adult learners regarding their individual progress Collaborate with other teachers across PAE Participate actively in monthly team meetings and communicate regularly with level leaders and Department Chair Use Google Suite (including Google Classroom) Support students' digital skill development Maintain accurate attendance and grading records, using required record- keeping database Provide data or documentations as needed to fulfill state or grant funding requirements Stay informed by attending monthly PAE Staff meetings or viewing the notes or recordings, and by reading the weekly staff newsletter REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience teaching multicultural populations and ESOL students Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in related field Excellent interpersonal skills Clear, concise oral and written communication Self-motivated with a high degree of flexibility Ability to work professionally and ethically within a multicultural setting, including ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy of persons, documents, data and communications Ability to manage time, set priorities, plan & implement projects effectively Ability to work in a demanding environment and a willingness to learn Strong organizational skills and high attention to detail [Preferred] Experience teaching online [Preferred] Ability to speak multiple languages [Preferred] Teacher certification in K-12 or Adult Education CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization (more info) EMPLOYMENT DETAILS: Job type: Temporary, part-time, hourly position (9 hours per week,remote, during the day) Assignment length: Winter term and beyond, as needed Location: Class will be taught at 14 Locust St, Portland, ME ABOUT ADULT ED: With a commitment to equitable learning and community engagement, Portland Adult Education (PAE) provides a diverse range of programs to help adults achieve their educational, professional, and personal goals.
