Entarian is seeking a Fisheries Small Vessel Captain to support fisheries stock assessments and ecosystem-based fisheries and protected species management in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, southeastern Atlantic (South Atlantic), and Caribbean regions. This position is based in Pascagoula, MS and will provide support within the Gear Unit. Responsibilities:Harvesting Unit Gear Support: Assist with construction and maintenance of selective fishing gear such as TEDs and BRDs used as training aids for fishers and for use in Unit research projects.Harvesting Unit Research: Provide gear expertise and assistance in support of Unit research projects.Laboratory Support: Provide fishing gear expertise and at-sea support to Mississippi Laboratories survey cruises.Class III Vessel Support: Conduct maintenance; preparation and operation of Mississippi Laboratory Class III research vessels and perform duties as First Mate or Captain aboard such vessels for Mississippi Laboratories research cruises. Responsible for aspects of vessel operation such as safe navigation, vessel cleanliness and seaworthiness, safe handling of all cargo and deck equipment, inventory of vessel stores and assisting vessel Captain in general vessel operations.Outreach and Education to Fishers and Marine Law Enforcement: Assist in conducting workshops and training sessions for commercial fishers in the proper use of federally required fishing gear in the Southeast and internationally as requested. This work may be conducted through planned workshops, attendance at industry meetings and dockside visits. Conduct training for federal and state marine law enforcement groups in the proper procedures for inspecting federally required fishing gear. Prepare reports as required of all outreach and training activities. The salary for this position is approximately $59,000/year. Work will be based on-site at NOAA's Pascagoula, MS facility.HS Diploma, or equivalent.At least 5 years’ experience in net construction and repair in commercial fishery or net shopA minimum of 5 years’ experience as Captain of a research or fishing vessel including operating and maintaining associated equipmentCurrent U.S. Coast Guard Masters License for 100-ton vessels or greaterProficiency in reading fishing gear technical schematics and gear construction techniquesAbility to obtain and maintain a United States Coast Guard License for the Operation of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (6-Pack license). Obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential, also known as TWIC card. Ability and willingness to maintain all necessary certifications and training as required by the NOAA Small Boat ProgramMust be available to work overtime Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident who has lived in the United States at least 3 out of the last 5 years and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to access applicable government facilities and systems.Knowledge of selective fishing methods and technology for commercial fishingAbility to provide effective oral presentations of technical materials using computer and multimedia equipment and provide effective hands-on demonstrations and training in gear constructionSmall boat operation certification (fast rescue boat)Knowledge of fishing gear regulationsEntarian was launched in 2026 as the new company name for legacy ERT and Sev1Tech, two companies built on providing excellent customer service and mission support for a variety of federal customers.
