Salary and Benefits The annual base salary for new agents starts at $51,632 and can go up to $92,219 depending on your grade level (GL-5/GL-7). In this role, you will enjoy a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, and various insurance options, along with paid leave and the chance to contribute to the Thrift Savings Plan, similar to a Roth 401(k). Exciting Recruitment Incentives New agents can benefit from up to $20,000 in recruitment incentives, with $10,000 available after completing the Border Patrol Academy and another $10,000 awarded for priority locations. Retention Incentives Available Additionally, you may qualify for retention incentives amounting up to $40,000 during your first four years with the agency. Potential Work Locations You will find diverse duty assignments essential to our operations. Note that your assigned location may not always align with your preferences, as assignments depend on operational needs. Certain federal law enforcement positions may offer higher locality pay. Once fully trained, you could also see an increase of 25% on your base salary through the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This career ladder position allows advancement through grades GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12, with eligibility for advancement after 52 weeks in each grade. Key Responsibilities As a Border Patrol Agent, you will play an essential role in securing borders, preventing unlawful activities, and enhancing our economy. Your key responsibilities will include: Identifying and questioning individuals suspected of immigration violations and reviewing relevant documentation. Apprehending undocumented individuals and smugglers using various surveillance techniques, including night operations with infrared scopes. Tracking evidence of illegal entries and conducting checks in diverse environments. Patrolling national borders and coastal areas using government assets such as vehicles, horses, and ATVs. Qualifications To qualify for the GL-5 grade level, you will need: One year of general work experience that demonstrates decision-making skills, stress management, and information-gathering abilities. A bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited institution can also meet this requirement. A combination of relevant experience and education may also qualify you. For GL-7 candidates, you will need: One year of specialized work experience that showcases your judgment in law enforcement situations. A bachelor's degree with superior academic performance or relevant graduate studies can substitute for the required experience. A mix of experience and education is also acceptable. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must be U.S. citizens, have lived in the U.S. for at least three of the last five years, and be under 40 years of age at the time of application in accordance with law enforcement retirement policies.
