Job Description:
Security Officer (On-Call) The Security Officer (On-Call) is responsible for maintaining safety and security for the members of the Carleton community and the physical property of Carleton College. In addition, security personnel are the first call for help in medical emergencies, criminal emergencies, and after-hour maintenance problems. The expected starting hourly range for this position is between $28.15 and $29.10. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility. The Security Officer (On-Call) is responsible for: Providing emergency first aid treatment and triage for all medical and psychological emergencies. Providing transportation as needed. Notifying Carleton College administrators of emergency medical and/or psychological emergencies when appropriate. Providing first response to criminal emergencies on Carleton College property. Conducting on-campus investigations into criminal incidents. Notifying appropriate law enforcement agencies for violations of state, local, and federal laws. Also notifying appropriate Carleton College administrators, Carleton College and/or Rice County counseling and/or support services when necessary. Providing emergency response to all fire, intrusion, mechanical, and panic alarms and contacting appropriate personnel for assistance when necessary. Assisting Residential Life staff in conducting fire drills each term. Conducting tests of Emergency Telephones and AEDs on a monthly basis. Enforcing and investigating violations of Carleton College policies and procedures as stated in the "Student Handbook". Providing emergency notification of appropriate Carleton College administrators of policies and procedures violations when necessary. Providing notification to campus community via the CarlAlert Mass Notification System of emergencies/potential emergencies (e.g., tornado warning) on/near campus. Providing physical security for all Carleton College buildings and/or property. Following routine locking and unlocking procedures for academic and administrative buildings. Providing locking and unlocking services and maintenance checks for all student-housing facilities during break periods. Monitoring and responding to access control alarm activity. Issuing access control badges after hours. Conducting investigations and verifications. Utilizing access control system software. Running alarm activity reports as needed. Reporting system malfunctions to system administrators. Providing response to after-hours maintenance requests for college owned buildings and property. When unable to correct maintenance problems, the Security Officer is responsible for notifying appropriate maintenance personnel. Responding to and taking corrective action for after-hours custodial services emergency calls. Providing access control to high security areas on campus. Providing access control for persons wanting to gain access to academic buildings after hours. Providing emergency lockout assistance for all residential halls, off-campus college owned student, faculty, and staff housing. Providing general locking and unlocking services for all campus facilities. Interacting with and participating in activities that create positive relationships with the student, faculty, staff, and visitors of the Carleton community. Additional job responsibilities include: Enforcing parking regulations on property owned or leased by Carleton College. Issuing citations, assessing fines, and authorizing towing of vehicles parked in violation of an established parking regulation. Directing traffic at special events as necessary. Providing emergency assistance for fleet vehicles. Assisting guests with climate control, custodial, room key, and transportation problems. Providing safe escort services for all students, faculty, and staff. Writing detailed reports of all incidents occurring during shift. Completing Maintenance Requests Forms for maintenance problems discovered during shift. Providing information to students, faculty, staff, and visitors as requested. Establishing and maintaining trust and confidence within the campus community, outside law enforcement agencies and the surrounding neighborhood. This position does not exercise direct supervision. This position reports to the Director of Security and Emergency Management. Required education/experience/skills: Previous experience in Security, Public Safety, or a related field. Current Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification or the ability to obtain an EMR certification within the first year of employment. An equivalent advanced-level first aid certification may be accepted in lieu of EMR, subject to employer approval. Basic computer skills required. Driver's license and ability to be insured by the College. Preferred: Associate or higher degree in related field. Security experience in a college/university setting. Physical requirements: Repetitive lifting of light weight objects (10-15 lbs.), frequent bending or stooping with activities. Work involves high risk with exposure to potentially dangerous situations, unusual environmental issues that require a range of safety and other precautions. Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
