The Brearley SchoolUpper School Psychologist / CounselorReporting to the Director of Counseling and Wellness and the Head of Upper School Student Life, the Upper School Psychologist/Counselor partners with Student Life to support students in Grades 9-12, advancing their social, emotional, and psychological well-being in a rigorous academic environment.The Psychologist/Counselor brings expertise in working with adolescents and families, providing individual and small-group counseling, delivering classroom instruction, and collaborating with administrators on student needs and division-wide initiatives. They work closely with teachers, grade heads, and advisors to promote well-being, strengthen relationships, and foster an inclusive school culture.This role is part of a K-12 team of mental health professionals collaborating across divisions to ensure continuity of care and shared best practices.Responsibilities: Provide direct support to Upper School students, addressing social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health needsDeliver crisis intervention and trauma-informed support, and contribute to division-wide crisis response planningFacilitate small group counseling to build healthy coping strategies and resiliencePartner with families to support student well-being and develop individualized support plansCollaborate closely with Upper School Student Life on all aspects of student social, emotional, and mental healthParticipate in the Student Support Team, helping assess needs and guide coordinated support strategiesDevelop and implement student support plans in partnership with leadership, learning specialists, nurses, faculty, families, and external providersPartner with Upper School leadership to design and sustain programs that promote a healthy, balanced student experience, including parent and family engagementLead and advise student-centered initiatives and interventions that respond to emerging needsWork with grade heads, advisors, and teachers to ensure a consistent, positive, and engaging student experienceMaintain accurate and confidential student records, including meeting notes and support documentationQualifications:Licensed Mental Health Counselor or LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) required; PhD or PsyD in clinical or school psychology preferred3-5 years of relevant experience in a school settingStrong written and verbal communication skillsDemonstrated ability to work effectively with adolescents and partner with familiesExperience leading or contributing to faculty professional developmentCommitment to the School's mission, values, and communityCultural competence and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and belongingCollaborative, approachable, and adaptable, with the ability to build relationships across all constituenciesHigh level of professionalism, initiative, and follow-throughSound judgment, discretion, and the ability to manage confidential informationCommitment to ongoing professional growthAbout the SchoolFounded in 1884, Brearley's mission has long combined outstanding academics with an insistence on a larger purpose: A passionate exchange of ideas within the School's walls that prepares girls of adventurous intellect and diverse backgrounds to put their knowledge and habits of mind to meaningful use in the wider world.A center of intellectual exuberance, the School offers an extraordinary program to girls from across and beyond New York City, attracting and developing a dynamic and committed faculty, who, along with a talented staff, instill in Brearley students a love of learning, an ability to think critically and creatively, a deep curiosity about the world and a pioneering spirit.
