May supervise technical and ancillary personnel. All personnel perform related work. Under medical and technical supervision of a duly licensed Physician, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, performs the following functions and activities: Examples of Typical Tasks:1. Responds to all cardiorespiratory emergency requests and provides respiratory care, as needed.2. Maintains inventory of respiratory care equipment and supplies required to provide respiratory care.3. Administers and monitors medical gases and humidifier systems.4. Administers and evaluates aerosolized medications to the respiratory tract.5. Initiates, monitors and adjusts parameters on continuous mechanical ventilators.6. May perform various procedures to obtain blood samples for pH blood gas analysis.7. May perform blood gas analysis and related quality control functions.8. May perform routine maintenance of department blood gas analyzers in accordance with Department of Health regulations.9. May perform pulmonary function studies.10. Completes Initiates, maintains and monitors various cardio-respiratory non-invasive equipment.11. May perform chest physiotherapy.12. Manages the cardio-respiratory status of patients requiring continuous mechanical ventilation during transport.13. Establishes and maintains artificial airways and performs special procedures.14. Performs cardio-respiratory invasive procedures in accordance with established protocols.15. Plans and coordinates day-to-day patient care activities as it relates to the practice of respiratory therapy.16. Completes required documentation.17. Coordinates and/or supervises activities of assigned technical and ancillary personnel.Minimum Qualifications1. Graduation from an Associate Degree program in Respiratory Therapy approved by the New York State Board of Education or a program determined equivalent in accordance with the Commissioner of the State Board of Education's regulations; and,2. Possession of a current license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in the State of New York; and,3. Possession of current registration as a Respiratory Therapist issued by the National Board of Respiratory Care.Special Notes: Individuals providing respiratory therapy services in New York on or after January 1, 1994 who believe they will meet, and submit documented evidence from the State Education Department, Division of Professional Licensing Services, of receipt of an application for licensure under the so-called grandparenting provisions of the new licensing law may continue to practice until either December 31, 1994 or receiving notice from the State Education Department of denial of licensure, whichever occurs first.
