SSAB offers challenging careers and comprehensive benefit program designed to keep employees and their families healthy and secure.POSITION PURPOSEThis position supports the production of SSAB steel by performing tasks to facilitate the preparation and testing of steel samples for verification of conformance to customer specifications. The position follows standard operation procedures and practices safe work habits to ensure production is as efficient and safe as possible. This position requires both working in an operational, hands-on capacity as well as working in a maintenance capacity and administrative duties in the assigned laboratory. The position is required to cross train and learn all work assignments in the laboratory and become competent in each. This position requires working on rotating swing shifts. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:Learn and follow the standard operating procedures and safe operating practices (JSA/SOP) Operate testing equipment (tensile, charpy, bend)Operate machine equipment (CNC machine centers)Operate sample preparation equipment (vertical, horizontal band saws)Prepare and analyze all steel samples using lab equipmentAccurately report testing information within a timely mannerReceive test coupons, prepare test specimens, perform required tests Verify, document and enter data into the forms, tracking system and spreadsheetsPerform routine preventative maintenance on equipment including validation checksTroubleshooting to assist in returning faulty equipment to operational statusRegular and reliable attendanceQUALIFICATIONS - Education, Experience and CompetenciesRequired Education:High school diploma or equivalent GED or HSE Preferred Education:Associates or Bachelors degree with a science major, such as chemistryRequired Experience:Experience with computers (basic operation and/or troubleshooting)Detail oriented (accuracy)Ability to work in a team environmentAbility to perform multiple tasks simultaneously Ability to handle fast pace with low margin for error Good verbal and written communication skillsAbility to interpret industry specifications (ASTM/EN/API/ABS/CSA)Preferred Experience:Previous applied technology experience with CNC machining, cutting and milling equipment WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe employee will frequently be required to:Sit, walk, stand - alternating throughout 12 hour shiftReach and twist at waist/desk levelUse both hands for handling, grasping, fingering, gripping and feeling textures and temperaturesLift and move up to 10 poundsPerform repetitive tasks for extended periodsThe employee will occasionally be required to:Lift and/or move up to 50 poundsReach above shoulder level and below waist levelBalance, stoop, kneel or crouch and climb stairsThe position requires the following vision, talking and hearing capabilities:Vision at near, mid, and far rangePeripheral vision and depth perception and the ability to adjust focusCommunicating (talking and hearing) in person, on the phone, and/or in group settingsThe employee will be required to use the following machines or tools:Desktop computerLab Analytical EquipmentMultimeterDatabaseThe employee will work in the following conditions:IndoorsAmid noise Around equipment in motionAmid mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazardsWhile wearing safety equipment and/or clothing for protection from hazardsPOSITION TYPE - WORK HOURS - TRAVEL REQUIREMENTSPosition is full time, hourly, and is eligible for overtimePosition works 12 hours a day, rotating swing shifts to include both days, nights and weekendsOnsite presence requiredOTHER DUTIESPlease note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that may be required of the employee for this job.
