Salary: $26.67 - $37.37 Hourly Location : Mankato, MN Job Type: Part Time Job Number: 2026-00014 Department: Sheriff's Office Division: Admin Opening Date: 02/25/2026 Closing Date: 3/10/2026 11:59 PM Central DESCRIPTION Under the direct supervision of the Chief Bailiff, the Bailiff supports the mission of the Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office by providing professional, courteous, and courageous law enforcement services that are vital to the protection of life, property, and preserving public peace. This position is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly courtroom for trials performed. The Bailiff is responsible for conducting various inspections and performing various clerical duties. This position is also responsible for overseeing the maintenance of the courtrooms, coordinating in-custody transports, developing policies and procedures, assisting court personnel, and participating in professional staff development. DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIESESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Provides courtroom and judicial security. Ensures the safety of judges, court staff, jurors, litigants, and the public. Calls court to order and maintains a secure courtroom environment. Escorts in-custody defendants to and from court as required. Monitors individuals entering the courtroom and alerts the judge and court staff to potential safety concerns. Calls witnesses, protects, and guards court exhibits, as directed. Delivers the verdict to the judge. Guards the jury through deliberation proceedings, arranges meals and lodging when necessary. Uses restraints in the courtroom on dangerous prisoners, witnesses, or spectators when appropriate. Remains vigilant and prepared to respond to emergencies or unexpected situations within court facilities. Maintains order in the courtroom. Ensures appropriate conduct of litigants, attorneys, court staff, and spectators in accordance with court directives, Minnesota statutes, and judicial orders. Carries out lawful orders of the court. Screens members of the public for entry into courtrooms and enforces restrictions related to capacity, recording devices, and other court-ordered limitations. Verifies with court personnel which case needs to be called. Ensures all courtroom policies and procedures are followed by the general public. Conducts security inspections and controls access. Performs routine inspections of courtrooms, temporary holding areas, and related spaces to ensure security and identify contraband or safety risks. Secures courtrooms and adjacent areas before, during, and after court sessions. Provides security in hallways, chambers, and other courthouse areas as assigned. Ensures court facilities are secured when court is not in session. Performs court support and clerical functions. Logs attendance of parties and attorneys and provides directions to court locations. Posts daily public court calendars and assists with the retrieval and delivery of court files when it does not compromise courtroom security. Receives and forwards complaints and documents to court administration, notarizing when authorized. Assists defendants and members of the public with required forms and paperwork, as appropriate. Serves civil process, including orders, summons, and subpoenas, as assigned. Oversees the physical maintenance and readiness of the courtroom. Ensure that courtrooms are properly equipped and ready for daily operations. Obtains supplies requested by the judge and coordinates maintenance of courtroom furnishings, technology, lighting, climate control, and cleanliness. Inspects and monitors security and safety equipment, including alarms, fire extinguishers, and first-aid supplies. Ensures courtrooms have the necessary equipment and items for daily activities. Coordinates in-custody court operations and transports. Communicates with jail staff, transport officers, public defenders, and court administration regarding in-custody defendants. Notifies appropriate parties when individuals are remanded into custody or taken into custody due to warrants. Coordinates custody transfers and transport requests in accordance with court orders and established procedures. Provides credible testimony in court. Attends and testifies in criminal and civil court proceedings. Represents the interests of the county, state, and federal government. Makes verbal account for observations, actions, and findings while performing official duties. Promotes a diverse, culturally competent, and respectful workplace. Engages positively with both internal and external customers. Communicates and interacts effectively and respectfully with colleagues, supervisors, representatives from other organizations, and the public. Interact regularly with judges, attorneys, defendants, witnesses, victims, and media and is expected to maintain professionalism at all times. Performs the physical and mental demands of the position. Attends work during regularly scheduled hours. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS: Assists other court personnel as appropriate. Assists court administration with running criminal history and driver's license checks. Assist the public by checking computer files for court hearings. Arranges courtroom space for administrative law hearings. Participates in professional staff development. Participates in training and education opportunities to maintain and improve proficiency. Attends and participates in professional organizations. Associates with employees and departments from other counties and states for collaboration. Complies with Use of Force Policy, POST regulations and required training. Performs other related functions as apparent or assigned. QUALIFICATIONS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma/GED; and Must be a licensed peace officer and submit copy of MN P.O.S.T. license. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of three (3) years of experience in law enforcement Proficient in understanding and speaking languages other than English, such as Spanish, Somali, Chinese, Sudanese, and Arabic, among others. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in the State of Minnesota. Must successfully pass a psychological evaluation, physical examination, drug and alcohol testing and background check. Must qualify with firearms within existing departmental qualification standards. Must submit to fingerprinting and a check of those fingerprints through the FBI and Minnesota BCA. Must comply with all federal and state laws and organizational and departmental policies and regulations. Must be able to provide credible testimony in court proceedings. Must wear a bullet-resistant vest while on duty. Must adhere to data practices policies and standards regarding non-public data. Access to non-public data should be strictly limited to what is necessary to fulfill job responsibilities. While accessing these data, the employee should take reasonable steps to prevent unauthorized access by individuals without a work-related reason. Once the work-related purpose is complete, non-public data must be securely stored in accordance with county policies and Minnesota Statutes. HOURS OF WORK Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., up to 29 hours per week. Hours are not set and may vary greatly. All hours worked are structured to meet service demands and the needs of the public served.
