Salary: $21.43 Hourly Location : Lehigh Acres, FL Job Type: Seasonal Job Number: 2026-05 Organization: Mosquito Control Department: Scientific Intelligence Opening Date: 03/02/2026 Closing Date: 4/3/2026 11:59 PM Eastern Description We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Seasonal Mosquito Surveillance Assistant to support our scientific intelligence and vector surveillance programs during peak season. This position plays a vital role in protecting public health by overseeing the Truck Trap Program, conducting RT-PCR molecular testing, assisting with mosquito collections and identification, and supporting ELISA testing for mosquito-borne pathogens. The role combines field coordination, laboratory diagnostics, data management, and cross-department collaboration to ensure accurate and timely surveillance results. This position typically works Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, during the high season (May through October). Some weekend work may be required based on weather conditions or mosquito activity levels. Essential FunctionsSet and collects mosquitoes traps used for mosquito surveillance Assist with mosquito identification as needed Record trapping data into database at time the traps were set and collected in MapVision iPhone app Measures and records landing rates and enters into database at time landing rate was taken in MapVision iPhone app Assist with distributing requested species into pools for RT-PCR testing Assist with maintaining and repairing all traps Set and collect mosquito traps for special event spray requests and complaint calls as needed Feed and water animal population as needed Cleans and maintains the animal rearing facilities and sentinel animal cages as needed Assist with collecting blood from the sentinel chickens and/or other sentinel animals as needed and records data in field journal Assist with preparing the collected blood samples for analysis by centrifuging blood separating the sera from the blood cells and removing the sera to vials for LCMCD and state laboratories Follow all District's Safety policies and procedures at all times Responsible for ensuring all assigned equipment is maintained and repaired as needed Must have regular and predictable attendance Other duties and projects as assigned QualificationsHave the ability to learn and identify a variety of mosquito species Must have basic computer skills and have the ability to learn and operate internal, web based programs including entering data into phone Apps and databases Have basic mechanical skills Must be able to read and understand technical instructions in English Must be able to ride in helicopters Must be able to work a varied schedule including weekend and early morning/nighttime hours as needed Have the ability to operate a variety of small equipment Must have a valid FL Class E Driver's License with a clean driving record Supplemental Information Work Environment/Physical Requirements: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to use hands and fingers to type, and grip and operate a variety of hand tools and other equipment. Excellent vision, both close and distance, is frequently required. Work Environment: The work environment varies but normally includes laboratories and office buildings and may occasionally include workshops, flight line, animal rearing/storage facilities, helicopters, boats, vehicles, mangroves, fields, and islands. Exposure to all types of weather is required when the position is working outside, exposed to sun, rain, mud, manure, a variety of farm animals, blood and insects. Occasional local travel and out of town travel is required. Noise level is usually low but occasional exposure to moderate noise levels when around helicopters. Working with and around chemicals, which are stored, handled, applied/used and disposed of according to exact labeling instructions, is required regularly.
