Job Description:
Position Overview The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for advanced diagnostics, repair, overhaul, and preventative maintenance of landfill and support equipment. This role requires in-depth knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, emissions components, and powertrain systems. The mechanic will ensure equipment uptime, operational reliability, and compliance with safety and environmental standards. Primary Equipment Serviced Landfill compactors (e.g., CAT 826, 836 series) Crawler dozers (D6-D9 class) Hydraulic excavators (30-80 ton class) Wheel loaders (950-980 class) Articulated haul trucks Roll-off trucks and support vehicles Stationary equipment (pumps, blowers, generators) Core ResponsibilitiesAdvanced Diagnostics & Repair Diagnose complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic failures Perform engine diagnostics using OEM software and scan tools Troubleshoot CAN bus systems and ECM-controlled components Repair or replace engines, transmissions, torque converters, final drives, differentials, and hydraulic pumps/motors Diagnose DEF and Tier 4 emissions systems Preventative & Predictive Maintenance Perform scheduled PM services (250/500/1000-hour intervals) Conduct oil sampling and interpret fluid analysis reports Inspect undercarriage wear components (rollers, idlers, sprockets, track chains) Maintain lubrication schedules and filtration systems Hydraulic Systems Diagnose high- and low-pressure hydraulic systems Rebuild hydraulic cylinders Troubleshoot pilot control systems and proportional valves Test and adjust relief pressures and flow rates Electrical Systems Diagnose and repair starting/charging systems Read and interpret wiring schematics Repair harnesses, sensors, and controllers Troubleshoot lighting and safety systems Welding & Fabrication Perform structural welding repairs on buckets, blades, and frames Fabricate brackets and reinforcement components as needed Documentation & Compliance Complete detailed work orders and parts documentation Maintain service logs and equipment history Ensure compliance with OSHA, MSHA (if applicable), and environmental regulations Follow lockout/tagout procedures Required Qualifications 5+ years of heavy equipment repair experience Strong knowledge of diesel engine systems (CAT, Cummins, Deere preferred) Experience with Tier 4 emissions systems Proficiency using OEM diagnostic software Ability to read hydraulic and electrical schematics Welding and fabrication experience Valid driver's license Preferred Qualifications OEM certifications (CAT, Komatsu, Volvo, etc.) CDL (Class A or B) ASE Heavy Truck Certification Experience in landfill, mining, or construction fleet environments Physical & Environmental Requirements Ability to lift 75 lbs Work in outdoor landfill conditions (heat, cold, dust, noise) Climb ladders and equipment safely Work in confined spaces when necessary Extended standing, kneeling, and bending Key Competencies Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills High mechanical aptitude Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Strong safety mindset Time management and productivity focus
