Two years relevant administrative assistant experience or experience in a related field. Certifications may be required. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered. Nature & Purpose of Position Performs specialist duties for the Veterans & Military-Connected Center (VMCC). Assists in providing a comprehensive start-to-finish experience for military-connected students as they navigate their academic journey at Sam Houston State University. Supports students by connecting them with campus resources, coordinating programs and services tailored to their needs, and fostering a supportive community that enhances their overall university experience. Primary Responsibilities Provides personalized customer service at the highest level to veterans & military-connected students. Assists students in navigating university resources, academic support services, and campus programs tailored to their needs. Facilitates the transition of veterans and military-connected students into the university environment, addressing any unique challenges they may face. Serves as a primary point of contact for students, answering inquiries via phone, email, and walk-ins. Performs receptionist duties, including directing phone calls, scheduling appointments, and maintaining office organization. Coordinates and supports Veterans & Military-Connected Center (VMCC) programs, events, and outreach efforts to foster engagement and community among military-connected students. Represents the VMCC at campus events, orientation sessions, and outreach activities. Assists in maintaining partnerships with campus departments and external organizations that support military-connected students. Supports budget activities in collaboration with the Associate Director. Assists with document and data processing, ensuring accuracy and organization of student records and reports. Supervises student workers, including participation in the hiring process, training, and assigning work priorities. Supports the professional development of student employees by providing mentorship and guidance. Advocates for military-connected students' needs within the university community, collaborating with faculty, staff, and administration to create a supportive and inclusive campus environment. Performs other related duties as assigned. Other Specifications During peak workloads, telephone periods and emails may be extensive. Requires ability to assist at the front counter, encountering students, parents, staff, and faculty. Demonstrate strong oral, written, interpersonal, and team-building skills. Express commitment to serving students. Ability to concentrate in quiet and distracting environments. Ability to apply complex regulations to individual situations. Demonstrate knowledge of military organizations, documents, and issues affecting veteran students. Seeks guidance as needed. Capable of maintaining confidentiality and understanding the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Complies with all state and federal mandates, as well as university policies. Requires some experience and the occasional use of independent judgment. Occasionally, may be required to work weekends, early mornings, nights, or special events.
