Salary and Benefits As a newly appointed Border Patrol Officer, your annual base salary will range from GL-5/GL-7, which is $51,632 to $92,219 per year. You will receive a comprehensive package of federal employment benefits that includes health, dental, and various insurance options, a generous leave program, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan (a retirement plan similar to a traditional ROTH 401(k)). Recruitment Incentive Newly appointed Border Patrol Officers may qualify for up to $20,000 in incentives, with the first $10,000 awarded upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy and the remaining $10,000 for accepting a prioritized location. Retention Incentive Officers may also qualify for up to $40,000 in additional incentives within their first four years. Duty Locations You will primarily be assigned to duty locations along the Southwest Border, which may necessitate relocation. While we consider your preferences, operational needs will determine your final assignment. Duty locations impact pay rates, and fully trained Officers may be eligible for an additional 25% of base pay based on the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. As a Border Patrol Officer, you will be responsible for: Identifying and questioning individuals suspected of immigration and customs violations while inspecting documents to verify citizenship. Preventing the illegal cross-border smuggling of individuals through vigilant surveillance and nighttime operations. Tracking physical evidence related to illegal entries or contraband. Conducting patrol checks of farms, buildings, traffic areas, and urban environments. Using various government resources, including vehicles and ATVs, to effectively patrol designated areas. Qualifications To qualify at the GL-5 grade, you must meet at least one of the following criteria: One year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making and composure in high-stress situations OR A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution OR A combination of relevant experience and education. For GL-7 grade, the qualifications include: One year of specialized work experience that reflects skills in law enforcement decision-making and effective handling of sensitive situations. A bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement or relevant graduate-level education OR A combination of experience and education related to law enforcement. Note: Prior experience in law enforcement or military service may qualify you for GL-9 or GS-11 levels. Additional Requirements Must be a U.S. Citizen. Must have primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years. Must be under 40 years of age, unless you have prior federal law enforcement experience. Veterans' preference may apply; qualified veterans are exempt from age restrictions. Upon hiring, you will undergo approximately six months of extensive training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, covering essential laws, operational procedures, and firearms training.
