Position Type: Exceptional Children/EC Bus MonitorDate Posted: 1/20/2026Location: Norwayne MiddleJob Title: Exceptional Children (EC) Bus Monitor (Temporary Ending June 11, 2026)Job SummaryThe EC Bus Monitor supports the safe, respectful, and efficient transportation of students with disabilities to and from school. This position works closely with the bus driver, school staff, and transportation department to ensure students' physical safety, emotional well-being, and compliance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and transportation plans. The EC Bus Monitor plays a vital role in creating a calm, supportive start and end to each student's school day.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesAssist students with boarding and exiting the bus safely, including the use of lifts, ramps, seat belts, harnesses, and wheelchairs as neededSupervise students during transportation to ensure safety and appropriate behaviorProvide support to students with physical, medical, emotional, or behavioral needsFollow students' IEPs, behavior plans, medical alerts, and transportation accommodationsUse positive behavior supports and de-escalation strategies when neededCommunicate concerns or incidents promptly to the bus driver and school administrationMaintain confidentiality of student information at all timesAssist in emergency procedures and evacuations as trainedEnsure the bus environment remains calm, respectful, and supportiveReport safety hazards, equipment issues, or student concerns immediatelyRequired QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalentAbility to work effectively with students with disabilitiesAbility to follow written and verbal instructionsStrong communication and teamwork skillsAbility to remain calm and professional in challenging situationsPreferred QualificationsExperience working with children with special needsTraining in behavior management, CPI, or de-escalation strategiesKnowledge of special education practices and terminologyPhysical RequirementsAbility to lift, assist, or physically support students as requiredAbility to climb bus steps, bend, stoop, and stand for extended periodsAbility to respond quickly in emergency situationsWork EnvironmentSchool bus environment during morning and afternoon routesExposure to varying weather conditions during loading and unloadingTerms of EmploymentPart-time, school calendar positionHours based on bus routes and student needsMust meet district and state requirements for background checks and trainingMission AlignmentThe EC Bus Monitor supports the district's mission by ensuring that all students are transported safely, respectfully, and with dignity creating a positive foundation for learning every day.
