Nurse Practitioner Intensivist (Night Shift) Position Summary The Nurse Practitioner Intensivist provides advanced clinical care to critically ill patients in the intensive care unit during overnight hours. Working collaboratively with the on-call intensivist physician and multidisciplinary ICU team, the NP manages acute changes in patient condition, performs critical care procedures, and ensures continuity of care throughout the night. Key Responsibilities Provide overnight management of critically ill ICU patients under physician supervisionPerform comprehensive patient assessments, including new admissions, transfers, and cross-cover evaluationsRespond to acute clinical deterioration, emergencies, rapid response calls, and code eventsDevelop, implement, and adjust treatment plans for unstable and complex patientsOrder, interpret, and document diagnostic tests, imaging, and laboratory studiesManage ventilators, sedation, hemodynamics, and vasoactive medicationsPerform bedside procedures within scope of practice (e.g., central and arterial line placement, intubation assistance, chest tube management)Communicate significant clinical changes to the supervising physicianCollaborate with nursing, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and consulting servicesProvide comprehensive handoff communication to the daytime ICU teamEnsure accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical recordSupport ICU protocols, patient safety initiatives, and quality improvement efforts Patient Population Medical, surgical, and/or specialty ICU patientsConditions may include respiratory failure, sepsis, shock, multi-organ failure, trauma, and post-operative critical illness Schedule Night shift onlyIncludes weekends and holidays based on unit coverage requirements Qualifications Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program (Acute Care NP preferred)Current national certification as a Nurse PractitionerActive or eligible state licensureBLS and ACLS certification requiredPrior ICU, critical care, emergency medicine, or hospital medicine experience strongly preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong critical thinking and autonomous clinical decision-making skillsAbility to manage high-acuity patients with limited overnight resourcesProficiency in critical care procedures and emergency responseExcellent communication, teamwork, and handoff skillsAbility to perform effectively in high-stress, fast-paced environments Work Environment Intensive care unit settingOvernight coverage with exposure to emergent and high-acuity clinical situationsRequires prolonged standing, lifting, and manual dexterity
