February 19, 2026 By Adam Case 02/2026CITY OF ELIZABETHTOWNJOB DESCRIPTIONJOB TITLE: Lifeguard CLASS: 51 - SeasonalDEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation LOCATION: American Legion Park REPORTS TO: Waterpark Manager and American Legion Park Manager POSITION OVERVIEW Lifeguards at the American Legion Waterpark play a critical role in providing a safe, welcoming, and fun environment for all guests. Lifeguards are responsible for actively monitoring the pool and surrounding areas, enforcing safety rules, and responding quickly and professionally to emergencies. This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working as part of a team, staying active, and making a positive impact in the community. Lifeguards work in a fast-paced outdoor environment and are expected to maintain a high level of attentiveness, professionalism, and customer service throughout each shift. The pool operates seven days a week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and Lifeguards should expect to work a varied schedule throughout the season. Examples of Duties Actively monitor swimmers from the lifeguard stand, in the water, or while patrolling the pool deck to ensure guest safety Enforce pool rules and facility policies in a calm, professional, and consistent manner Identify potential safety hazards and take proactive steps to prevent accidents or injuries Respond to emergencies, including water rescues, first aid, CPR, and AED use, as needed Participate in routine safety checks and assist with opening and closing procedures Complete daily and end-of-shift cleaning duties to maintain a clean and safe facility Assist with swim lessons and other aquatic programs as assigned Attend required in-service trainings and staff meetings throughout the season to maintain skills and certifications Provide friendly customer service and help create a positive experience for all patrons Eligibility Requirements Must be 15 years of age or older Must hold a valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification or be able to successfully obtain certification prior to working independently Certification courses are provided free of charge by the department for employees who successfully pass all course requirements Must be able to pass all American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Deep Water) prerequisites, including: Prerequisite 1 - Swim/Tread/Swim Sequence (without stopping): Jump into the water, fully submerge, resurface, and swim 150 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both (no back or side swimming; goggles permitted) Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs Swim an additional 50 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination Prerequisite 2 - Timed Event (1 minute, 40 seconds): Swim 20 yards (face in or out of water; goggles not permitted) Surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back, holding the object with both hands and keeping the face at or near the surface Exit the water without using a ladder or steps Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions Ability to follow instructions, work as part of a team, and maintain a professional attitude Willingness to attend required in-service trainings throughout the season Additional Information Uniforms and lifeguard suits are provided This is a seasonal position with hours based on facility needs Weekend, evening, and holiday availability is required
