Police Department Alternate Crossing Guard (PDCGALT01) Non-Union Hours of work - Morning crossings begin at 7 am. Afternoon crossing begin at 2 pm. Salary - $9.20 per crossing or $18.40 per hour General Description: Individual is hired to help schoolchildren cross streets safely. They are responsible for ensuring that the traffic is managed properly during school hours and that children are made aware of hazards that may be posed to them when crossing the street, without paying attention to their surroundings. Essential Job Tasks and Responsibilities * Engage students in conversation to provide them with information on street rules & protocols * Guide and escort students and other pedestrians at crossings and intersections, until they reach the other side safely. * Gauge traffic by holding signs or through mechanical devices in order to permit students to pass safely. * Gauge traffic gaps, and make good use of them to assist students in crossing busy streets. * Observe the surroundings of schools, specifically roads and streets, and identify and report any hazards. * Report violations of operators who fail to obey your commands by obtaining license plate number of vehicles and report them to the East Longmeadow Police Department. * Place and remove caution signs, cones as required, and caution drivers of speeding vehicles by using hand signals or whistles. * Monitor traffic on a regular basis and repost any unusual or adverse traffic conditions that may have an effect on student safety. * Fill out weekly crossing guard sheet and submit to the East Longmeadow Police Department in a timely manner. * Performs all other duties as assigned. Education, Experience & Knowledge * Must have a High School Diploma or its equivalent * Knowledge of current Massachusetts traffic laws, emergency procedures. * Moderate responsibility for the care, condition and use of materials, equipment, and tools. * Responsibility for the use of discretion and independent judgement in the safe crossing of children. * Ability to communicate effectively, ability to follow written and verbal instructions and the ability to work effectively with children, parents and school employees. Work Environment Regular and prompt attendance is essential, mental effort is required daily, job is performed outside and is subject to exposure to the elements: heat, cold, and wet conditions; job involves walking and standing for long periods of time, constant seeing and hearing are required to fulfill job responsibilities, job is subject to exposure to environmental and/or physical hazards.
