DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position is responsible for performing various duties related to the safety, health and welfare of students in multi-disabled classes. The work calls for the exercise of good judgment and exceptional ability to relate well with these children. General supervision is received from an immediate supervisor. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) * Provides direct care to multi-disabled students; * Meets the school bus in the morning; * Deposits child in school bus after school; * Escorts child to class and assists with wheelchair, crutches or relator; Sits with student and assists with books, papers, etc.; * Lifts child in and out of wheelchair to desk or other specified areas; * Assists in physically restraining children that are acting out to ensure that they do not hurt themselves; * Assists students with toileting needs on a daily and ongoing basis; * Escorts student to school nurse for medication or for first aid; * Escorts student out of building for fire drills, etc.; * Assists in feeding situations, eating with child in cafeteria and helping with feeding skills, preparing trays, checking intake and serving nutritious snacks; * Reports any sign of illness, temperature, diarrhea, abdominal pains and rashes to school nurse. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: * Working knowledge of multi-disabled children; * Ability to establish good relationships with multi-disabled, disabled, special education children, teachers, parents, etc.; * Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; familiarity with classroom routines; * Good command of the English language; Ability to maintain discipline; * Ability to learn and handle special equipment used by multi-disabled children; Neatness of appearance; tact; courtesy; good judgment; alertness; * Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma.
