Job Description:
Summer College Intern The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system's 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City. The Agency Chief Contracting Office (ACCO) is responsible for directing and managing all agency procurement and vendor payment activity. The ACCO's Office works cooperatively with DEP's operational and support bureaus to manage the procurement and payment processes to support their programs and operations requiring capital construction projects, supplies, and various services. The ACCO also coordinates with the Mayor's Office of Contract Services (MOCS), the Comptroller's Office, the Office of Management and Budget and other agencies. The Large Contract Payment (LCP) Unit processes all capital and expense-funded payments greater than $250,000, covering construction, design, and professional services contracts. The unit handles approximately 3,800 payments annually, totaling over $1.1 billion. The unit ensures timely and compliant payments in accordance with NYC's Prompt Payment Rules and Comptroller's Directives. The selected candidate will assist with the processing preparations and submission of tax bills for the Agency, the processing and entry of payment vouchers, researching, resolving and responding to vendor and bureau inquires. Assist with the daily routing of payments to the Engineering Audit Office, which includes verifying each document for accuracy. The selected candidate may assist with preparing weekly reports, maintaining files and other high-level clerical duties. In addition, the summer intern will develop a final presentation to display assignments they have been involved with while working as an intern at the DEP Interns Closing Ceremony. Minimum Qualifications As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year). NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year. Preferred Skills -Student must be currently enrolled at a college/university at the undergraduate level majoring in accounting -Student must have at least a 2.5GPA (on a 4.0 scale) -Student must have at least a junior class standing Selection Criteria: -Capable of tracking action items and as well as organizing materials while displaying strong analytical skills -Possess strong software skills, including competency in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel spreadsheets and Power Point -Display strong communication skills, both written and oral -Leadership skills, self-motivated and ability to work well with minimal supervision Public Service Loan Forgiveness As a prospective employee of the City of New York, you may be eligible for federal loan forgiveness programs and state repayment assistance programs.
