Job Overview: Search Solution Group is seeking a Sr. Sheet Metal Estimator on behalf of our client, a company specializing in custom metal fabrication and laser cutting. The Senior Sheet Metal Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and strategically structured cost estimates for complex fabricated sheet metal components and assemblies. This role plays a critical part in evaluating manufacturability, determining optimal production strategies, and driving profitability through disciplined cost analysis and technical expertise. In addition to estimating responsibilities, this position provides technical leadership throughout the quoting process, supports engineering review, and assists with project integration into production to ensure customer requirements are successfully achieved. The Senior Estimator serves as a key liaison between customers, vendors, engineering, and operations teams. Key Responsibilities: Review and interpret complex manufacturing drawings, blueprints, and 3D models to assess scope, risk, and manufacturability. Analyze GD&T requirements and tolerance stack-ups to evaluate production feasibility and cost impact. Develop detailed cost models including materials, labor, machine time, tooling, outside services, finishing, machining, welding, and assembly operations. Determine the most cost-effective manufacturing strategies, including make-versus-buy decisions. Lead technical discussions with customers, vendors, engineering, and production teams to clarify requirements and resolve issues. Manage RFQs from receipt through submission, ensuring accuracy, competitiveness, and margin objectives are achieved. Identify design risks and recommend manufacturability improvements or cost-saving opportunities. Support project transition from quote to production, assisting with engineering clarification and shop integration. Perform reverse engineering of customer-supplied components when required and generate drawings for internal or subcontractor use. Track quote performance metrics and drive continuous improvement in estimating accuracy and strategy. Maintain detailed documentation of estimates, assumptions, and supporting data within ERP/MRP systems. Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, production, and quality teams to ensure alignment. Requirements include: Education: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related field preferred, or equivalent industry experience. Experience: Minimum of 10+ years of estimating experience in sheet metal manufacturing or a related fabrication environment required. Extensive background in fabrication, engineering, or manufacturing operations strongly preferred. Experience working directly with customers in a B2B manufacturing environment required. Skills: Advanced blueprint and technical drawing interpretation skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities. Excellent organizational and time-management skills. Ability to manage multiple high-value RFQs in a deadline-driven environment. Professional communication and customer-facing skills. Ability to manage challenging customer situations with professionalism and composure. Certifications: Relevant manufacturing or engineering certifications are a plus but not required. Knowledge: Advanced knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and manufacturability analysis. Comprehensive understanding of sheet metal fabrication processes including laser cutting, turret punching, forming/bending, welding, machining, hardware insertion, and finishing/coating operations. Strong understanding of material properties, production efficiencies, and manufacturing cost drivers. Proficiency with ERP/MRP systems, estimating software, and Microsoft Excel. Knowledge of quoting strategy, margin analysis, and production workflows.
