Medical-Surgical Nurse (RN) - Carthage, Illinois

An experienced Med/Surg registered nurse is needed for a 13-week contract assignment starting ASAP in a well-regarded hospital in western Illinois. This role involves working 12-hour night shifts within a dedicated 16-bed Medical-Surgical unit that maintains a 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio, allowing for personalized, high-quality care. Location: Carthage, IL offers a welcoming community atmosphere typical of small-town living in western Illinois. Qualifications: Current RN licensure in Illinois 2-5 years of nursing experience, preferably in a rural hospital setting BLS certification required; PALS preferred Strong assessment, critical thinking abilities, and telemetry monitoring experience Ability to interpret telemetry strips independently Responsibilities: Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients with medical and surgical needs, including respiratory conditions (COPD, pneumonia), cellulitis, CHF, and post-operative cases such as colon resections and orthopedic procedures Monitor patients using Nihon Kohden telemetry and interpret clinical data accurately Collaborate closely with the clinical care coordinator, charge nurse, and weekend house supervisor Assist with outpatient infusions as needed (experience preferred) Adhere to thorough documentation standards to support quality care and lower patient ratios Schedule: Night shifts, 7 PM to 7 AM Variable weekends with every other or every third weekend covered Schedules published six weeks in advance, allowing for flexibility No mandatory holidays or call, though volunteers appreciated Unit Features and Dress Code: Support from one CNA per shift Use of advanced respiratory equipment including high-flow oxygen and Vapotherm (BiPAP handled in ICU) Pewter scrub tops with black pants and shoes required; colored tops allowed with pewter outerwear This contract opportunity is ideal for nurses who thrive in patient-focused, rural hospital environments and value supportive team dynamics.
