Job Description:
Canyon Peak Power, situated in Bennett, Colorado, is a 162 MW simple-cycle gas facility delivering reliable, on-demand energy. The plant features six GE LM2500 simple-cycle gas turbines, offering rapid-start capability and high operational flexibility. Designed to support grid stability, it plays a critical role in meeting peak electricity demand across the region. Opportunity Summary The Instrumentation, Controls, and Electrical (IC&E) Technician at Canyon Peak Power is critical to reliable plant operations, performing calibration, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of instrumentation, control systems, and electrical and power equipment, including PLCs, DCS, SCADA, turbine controls, and electrical distribution systems. This role supports preventive and corrective maintenance to optimize performance, minimize downtime, and ensure fast-start operation. Qualified to operate the plant independently during on-call rotations, the IC&E Technician collaborates with engineers, operations, and contractors—and follows safety and regulatory standards—to maintain safe, efficient, and reliable plant operations. Your scope of responsibility as IC&E Technician includes the following primary functions: Calibrate, test, maintain, troubleshoot, and install instrumentation, control systems, and electrical equipment, including fuel gas control valves, actuators, dampers, VFDs, motors, battery chargers, inverters, transmitters, analyzers, gas chromatographs, and combustion turbine instrumentation. Perform corrective, preventive, predictive, and emergency maintenance on electrical systems, including medium- and low-voltage switchgear, motor control centers, transformers, generators, excitation systems, batteries, chargers, auxiliary equipment, and power distribution systems ranging from 24V DC to 13.8kV AC, including meters, protective relays, heaters, and lighting systems. Maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize PLCs, DCS, SCADA, and plant communication networks to support reliable, fast-start, and peaking operations. Calibrate and troubleshoot combustion turbine control and monitoring systems to ensure safe operation and emissions compliance. Read, interpret, and apply technical documentation, including electrical schematics, P&IDs, and control logic diagrams, to diagnose and resolve system issues. Collaborate with plant personnel to support routine and outage maintenance, inspections, and mechanical work to minimize equipment downtime. Install new equipment, implement system modifications, and maintain tools, test equipment, and calibration devices in proper working condition, following safety procedures and codes. Maintain accurate logs, calibration records, equipment histories, drawings, and technical documentation using CMMS and software tools, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, for reporting and analysis. Promote safe work practices, identify hazards, and support plant safety and environmental programs, including proper handling of hazardous materials and strict adherence to Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures. Oversee contractor instrumentation and electrical work during outages or special projects. Perform Plant Operations, including completing operator qualification and independently operating the plant during on-call rotations, startups, shutdowns, and routine operations, providing flexible support during planned and emergency outages. Stay current with evolving industry technologies and contribute to continuous improvement of plant operations. Train or mentor other personnel to ensure skill development and knowledge transfer. Operate site vehicles, including pickups, forklifts, or aerial lifts, as needed. Perform additional duties as assigned to support safe, reliable, and efficient operations. Adherence to these safety responsibilities is one of the key factors in the evaluation of each employee’s performance. Working Relationships The IC&E Technician reports directly to the Plant Manager. This role involves interfacing with contractors and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) personnel to ensure necessary support and coordination. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions. Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility. Fitness for Duty All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening. Work Schedule The IC&E Technician works a rotating 12-hour shift schedule, alternating between day and night shifts to support continuous 24/7 operations, with the potential for assignment to a Monday–Friday day shift as operational needs allow. This position will also occasionally necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or “On call” status will also be required. Compensation This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $38 to $50 per hour, along with eligibility for an annual performance bonus.
