Position Summary The Controlled Substances Coordinator will be responsible for assisting University of Georgia faculty with registration, licensing, and permitting for the research use of Controlled Substances as required by federal and state regulation. The Controlled Substances Coordinator will facilitate compliance of registered faculty with local, state and federal regulations and institutional policies governing the procurement, storage, handling, disposition, and documentation of controlled substances at the University of Georgia. This role involves assessing controlled substances inventories, reviewing related records and verifying compliance to prevent the misuse, diversion or mishandling of such substances. The role requires collaboration with and assisting UGA research compliance units and interaction with state and federal regulatory agencies. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies * Demonstrates current knowledge of and compliance with applicable laws and regulations that impact how controlled substances are managed, including but not limited to the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970 (aka The Controlled Substances Act). * Strong attention to detail and meticulous record keeping, especially involving the conduct of audits in healthcare, the pharmaceutical industry and/or the research settings. * Well-developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with the research community, resolve conflicts, and efficiently manage time and projects. * Competency with technology, including PC skills and database use. * Ability to adapt and remain productive in response to ad hoc requests, scope changes, and a fluctuating work environment. * Project management abilities to develop and sustain the Controlled Substances Coordination program for research. Duties/Responsibilities Duties/Responsibilities * Conduct routine and ad hoc assessments of controlled substances licensees who are managing distinct controlled substance uses across the university, to ensure their compliance with regulatory requirements and institutional policies. * Assessments will include the review and verification of inventory records, purchase orders, and usage logs for controlled substances. * It will also involve confirmation of appropriate storage conditions, security measures, and in-date inventories. Percentage of time 40 Duties/Responsibilities * Identify discrepancies, investigate causes, and provide recommendations for corrective actions when controlled substances management noncompliance is identified. * Follow up to ensure that corrective actions are implemented. Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities * Collaborate with various compliance teams to ensure the proper handling and reporting of controlled substances. * Provide expertise as requested to assist in the review and approval of relevant research protocols. Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities * Stay updated on changes to local, state, and federal laws regarding controlled substances. * Coordinate with regulatory agencies and institutional oversight units to ensure effective communication and institutional compliance. Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities * Create and develop an overarching educational outreach effort to both licensees and users to clarify and set the expectations for compliant controlled substances use and management.
