Non Exempt Reports To: Transportation SupervisorJOB SUMMARY To provide safe and efficient transportation for students to and from school and for special events. To enforce rules, regulations, and laws to maintain safety during transport, also during loading and unloading students. Work is characterized by ability to follow routes, and to make independent decisions that align project objectives with department and district goals. Performs duties with close supervision. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Drives school buses or any district Pupil Transporting Vehicle on regularly scheduled routes, field trips, and other type of district approved trips. Could include vehicles equipped for wheel chairs and other special needs. Obeys all traffic laws and observes State of Oregon standards and regulations regarding the transportation of students, as well as Defensive Driving Techniques. Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of the location, operation, purpose and use of all controls, instruments, gauges, and emergency equipment on the vehicle he/she will operate. Maintain confidentiality regarding students being transported. Keeps assigned bus clean inside; checks bus before each operation for mechanical defects; notifies the transportation supervisor in case of mechanical failure or lateness. Picks up and discharges students only at authorized stops; transports only those students on the route list or those who have obtained a bus pass. Manages student efficiently in a firm, but friendly manner; maintains safety and order when students are on the bus; reports undisciplined students to the appropriate administrator. Demonstrates the necessary physical skills and mental ability to safely and efficiently operate the vehicle as determined by the certified training officer. Reports all accidents and completes required reports and paperwork in an accurate and timely manner. Reports all incidents which need to be brought to the attention of the Transportation Coordinator on a Miscellaneous Incident Report. Exhibits a familiarity with any route he/she will be required to drive. Exercise sound judgement in driving in varying weather conditions, on all types of roads and in changing traffic conditions. Operate and service school bus equipment and accessories such as doors, windows, radios, fire extinguishers, highway warning kits, tire chains, first aid and body fluid kits, and seat belt cutter. While working collaboratively with others, implements decisions within ASD established policies and procedures. Professionally represents the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff, and students and resolves conflict in a professional manner. Works collaboratively with District and building administrators and other department staff to provide reliable service to customers. Communicate clearly with coworkers and other staff. Participate as an effective team member. Provide impeccable customer service. Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, administrators and parents and resolves conflict in a professional manner. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required. Attends work regularly and is punctual. Annually pass the District's required online training by the District's assigned due-date. MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Marginal duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned.Participates in DistricUState in-service/training and training courses as required. Participates in professional growth activities. Attends staff meetings. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment. Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required. Language Skills: Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Ability to follow written directions. Must possess basic telephone and office skills. Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic math functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. . Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in a variety of situations. Computer Skills: Basic computer skills required, including the ability to receive, send and communicate by email, utilize the District's sub-calling software, and complete basic data entry on computer. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, administrators, parents and members of the community. Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant distractions. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certificates as determined by the District including a current valid Oregon Commercial Driver's license and first aid card. Must be able to obtain an Oregon Department of Education School Bus Drivers Certificate. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must demonstrate sufficient strength and agility to move about in bus to assist students with evacuation in case of emergency. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision.
