Salary and Benefits The annual base salary for newly appointed Border Patrol Agents (BPAs) varies by grade: GL-5/GL-7: $49,739 - $89,518 per year Pay rates are influenced by duty location, with higher locality pay in certain areas. Fully trained BPAs may be eligible for bonuses up to an additional 25% of base pay. This role allows for grade level progression from GL-5 to GS-12, with promotions available after completing a year in each grade. BPAs enjoy a rich array of federal benefits including health, dental, insurance plans, substantial annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, which is similar to a traditional ROTH 401(k). Recruitment Incentive: Newly appointed BPAs may receive incentives up to $20,000, with the first $10,000 rewarded upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy and the remaining $10,000 for accepting a prioritized location. Retention Incentive: Newly appointed BPAs may qualify for up to $40,000 in additional incentives over their first four years. Duties and Responsibilities As a BPA, you will become part of a workforce dedicated to safeguarding the American public by protecting our borders and preventing illegal activities. Your role will include: Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws. Preventing and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers through surveillance and monitoring operations. Interpreting tracks and physical evidence related to illegal entry and contraband. Conducting various patrols including traffic, farm, building, and transportation checks. Utilizing diverse government assets for patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways. Qualifications For GL-5 grade level: One year of general work experience demonstrating leadership, decision-making, and the ability to maintain composure under stress, or; A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, or; A combination of experience and education that meets these requirements. For GL-7 grade level: One year of specialized work experience related to law enforcement demonstrating decision-making and tactical competencies, or; A bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement, or; A combination of experience and education that meets these criteria. Note: Previous military or law enforcement experience may qualify you for higher grade levels. Other Requirements Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen. Residency: Must have primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years. Age Restriction: Must be selected before reaching the age of 40, with exceptions for eligible veterans. Formal Training: Selected candidates will attend the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six months of intensive training.
