Payroll & State Tax Registration Consultant (Contract)Position SummaryOur client is seeking an experienced Payroll & State Tax Registration Consultant to support businesses with multi-state payroll setup, employer tax registrations, payroll and benefit compliance, and onboarding into payroll systems. This consultant will work closely with HR, finance, accounting, and operations teams to ensure accurate and compliant payroll tax registrations and filings across various states and local jurisdictions.The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of payroll processing, state employer tax accounts, unemployment insurance registrations, withholding tax requirements, and payroll platform implementation.Key ResponsibilitiesPayroll & Tax RegistrationRegister businesses for state payroll tax accounts including:State withholding taxState unemployment insurance (SUI)Local payroll tax accounts where applicableManage multi-state employer registrations and compliance requirementsCoordinate account setup with payroll providers and state agenciesMaintain accurate employer tax account records and login credentialsMonitor registration status and resolve agency issues or delaysPayroll SupportAssist with payroll system setup and configurationSupport onboarding onto the payroll platform:ADPReview employee tax setup and state withholding configurationsEnsure payroll tax compliance with federal, state, and local requirementsSupport quarterly and annual payroll tax filing processesCompliance & ReportingResearch into changing payroll tax laws and registration requirementsAssist with notices from state tax agencies and unemployment departmentsMaintain compliance calendars and registration tracking reportsSupport audits and payroll tax reconciliationsDocument processes and maintain compliance proceduresClient & Internal SupportServe as a liaison between clients, payroll providers, and state agenciesProvide guidance on state nexus and employer registration requirementsRespond to payroll tax questions from internal teams and clientsTrain staff on payroll registration processes and compliance best practicesQualifications3+ years of payroll tax, payroll operations, or state tax registration experienceStrong understanding of:Multi-state payroll complianceState employer tax registrationsSUI and withholding accountsPayroll tax filing requirementsExperience working with payroll software platformsKnowledge of federal payroll tax regulations and state labor lawsStrong organizational and project management skillsAbility to manage multiple registrations and deadlines simultaneouslyExcellent communication and problem-solving abilitiesPreferred QualificationsCPP (Certified Payroll Professional) certification preferredExperience in a PEO, staffing agency, CPA firm, or payroll services environmentFamiliarity with onboarding remote employees across multiple statesExperience handling payroll notices and agency correspondence
