An educational program is seeking a qualified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) to provide essential services to an 11th-grade student with visual impairments in Oakland, CA. These conditions impact distance vision and cause eye fatigue, necessitating accommodations such as visual breaks and enlarged text. The student requires specialized support to access the Expanded Core Curriculum, with a need for development in social interaction, independent living skills, and mobility.Key responsibilities:Deliver 150 minutes of monthly in-person orientation and mobility servicesProvide make-up sessions for minutes not served since AugustDesign and implement programs to meet O&M goals due November 2025Assist the student in analyzing intersections and crossing streets with 90% accuracyTrain safe and proper cane techniques on stairsSupport use of internet and apps for route planning and execution in four new locationsDesired qualifications and experience:Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS)Experience working with students with visual impairments and multiple ocular conditionsAbility to assess and adapt mobility techniques for independent living skillsStrong communication skills to collaborate with educators and familyThis opportunity offers the chance to make a meaningful impact on a students independence and quality of life through specialized orientation and mobility services.
