Your role as a Border Protection Officer is vital to the Federal Law Enforcement Officer profession. Your Typical Responsibilities Will Include: Enforcing customs, immigration, and agricultural laws and regulations. Facilitating legitimate trade and travel. Conducting inspections of individuals and vehicles. Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States. Salary, Incentives, and Benefits Recruitment Incentive: Newly appointed Border Protection Officers may receive up to a $15,000 annual incentive for specific locations, under a three-year service contract, or a four-year service contract depending upon the area. Annual Base Salary: For newly appointed roles, the salary ranges from $40,332 to $109,952 per year, varying by grade level (GS-5 to GS-7). Locality pay varies by duty location. Additionally, officers can earn up to $45,000 in overtime pay. This position is a career ladder leading to GS-12, with eligibility for promotion upon successful completion of each grade level for a total of 52 weeks, as determined by the agency. Qualifications: For GS-5 Grade Level: Three (3) years of general work experience demonstrating people skills and the ability to learn; A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; Or a combination of experience and education. For GS-7 Grade Level: One (1) year of specialized work experience at the GS-5 level, including inspections for criminal activity, fraud, and compliance with regulations; A bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement or one year of graduate-level education. Other Requirements Include: You must be a U.S. Citizen. Primary U.S. residency for 3 of the last 5 years. Age restrictions apply: Candidates must be under 40 unless veterans or current federal law enforcement. Training: Expect to complete a paid pre-academy orientation and a 101-day training program. You will acquire necessary law enforcement skills, including firearms training and examination of cargo. Candidates in specific locations may also need to complete an online Spanish program.
