Job Description Job Title: Lifeguard Department: Community Education Reports To: Community Education Coordinator Exempt Status: Non-exempt Job Summary: Under the direction of the Community Education Coordinator, the Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of all patrons in and around the pool by preventing and responding to emergencies in accordance with established safety procedures and American Red Cross standards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Provide continuous and active supervision of the pool area, enforcing all aquatic facility rules and safety regulations. Recognize and respond effectively to emergencies in accordance with American Red Cross Lifeguard training, CPR, First Aid, AED, and established emergency procedures. Maintain constant surveillance of patrons in shallow and deep water areas to identify hazards or behaviors that may lead to injury. Complete accident and incident reports accurately and promptly following any occurrence. Conduct routine safety inspections of the pool area, equipment, and facility; report unsafe conditions or maintenance concerns to appropriate supervisory staff. Assist with pool set-up, take-down, lane lines, equipment organization, and general cleanliness of the aquatic facility. Provide courteous and professional customer service to patrons, parents, students, and staff; address concerns appropriately and refer complex matters through the established chain of command. Attend and participate in required meetings, orientations, trainings, in-services, and debriefings; maintain and renew required certifications. Follow all Community Education policies, district guidelines, safety standards, grooming expectations, and organizational procedures while maintaining a professional demeanor. In the event of an emergency, perform water rescues, administer First Aid and CPR/AED, and provide appropriate care until emergency medical services arrive, if necessary. Minimum Qualifications: Requires Red Cross Lifeguard Certification. Essential Job Knowledge and Specialized Subject Knowledge Required to Perform the Essential Functions of the Job: Knowledge of water safety principles, risk prevention practices, and surveillance techniques in an aquatic environment. Knowledge of emergency response procedures, including water rescue techniques, CPR, AED operation, First Aid, and use of rescue equipment. Knowledge of district emergency procedures and facility-specific safety protocols. Familiarity with district policies, aquatic facility guidelines, and Community Education standards. Knowledge of proper documentation procedures including accident and incident reporting. Understanding of patron supervision practices and behavior management strategies appropriate for children and adults. Essential Skills Necessary to Perform the Work: Ability to maintain continuous visual and auditory surveillance of patrons in a noisy aquatic environment. Ability to recognize distress signals, assess emergency situations quickly, and respond appropriately and effectively. Strong decision-making skills and the ability to remain calm, focused, and professional in high-pressure or emergency situations. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with children, adults, parents, and staff. Ability to enforce rules consistently and professionally while maintaining positive public relations. Ability to work collaboratively within a team, follow established policies and chain of command, and maintain professional working relationships. Physical ability to perform water rescues, lift and move individuals, and remain alert and in position for extended periods of time. Work Environment: Duties are performed primarily in an indoor aquatic facility within a school setting. The employee is regularly exposed to heat, humidity, noise, and pool chemicals. The position involves continuous monitoring of patrons and frequent interaction with students and community members. This position requires the employee to be on the pool deck or in the water for extended periods of time. Physical Job Requirements: Employee is continuously required to stand, walk, talk, and hear; frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and occasionally required to sit or climb. Employee must be able to swim proficiently, perform water rescues, and exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including assisting or rescuing individuals. Employee must be able to successfully complete and maintain the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification requirements.
