Base Pay: $18.59 Hourly . SUMMARY: Drives and insures proper maintenance of an 18-wheeler, operates various other equipment as assigned. Performs routine maintenance support work. The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Regularly operates, inspects and loads 18-wheel tractor-trailer between stockpile yard and street repair locations. Operates a front-end loader, mower, backhoe, pneumatic roller and oil truck and other equipment as assigned. Maintains assigned vehicles in ready working conditions, including fuel, proper lubrication and cleaning. Sprays oil on road prior to paving. Drives and operates small dump truck, hauling materials to and from job sites. May operate a water truck, power broom, patch truck and bulldozer. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus at least one year of experience in driving an 18-wheeler and operating other equipment used in maintenance. Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, may be considered for current Nueces County employees only. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Texas Class A Commercial Drivers License; Tanker, and no restrictions. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the safe operation of the equipment used and of the provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to the operation of this equipment. Sufficient skills to operate this equipment effectively and safely. Ability to service and make minor repairs on equipment and to know safety standards to prevent hazards. Ability to perform strenuous work in the outdoors. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with fellow employees.
