Job Description

The Sr. Laboratory Associate - Histology contributes to our mission by preparing histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination by staff scientist(s) and pathologist(s). Responsibilities: * Prepare sections of human tissue for microscopic evaluation using routine histology procedures including: embedding, microtomy, and hematoxylin and eosin staining and subsequent coverslipping of slides; gross dissection of tissues may be required; * Prepare sections for immunohistochemistry evaluation and nucleic acid isolation (slides and paraffin curls) * Perform special stains upon request * Perform microscopic slide review/microanatomy (in conjunction with staff scientists) of blocks for block deviation projects; performs subsequent division of blocks for the purpose of sale. * Communicate with Project Managers regarding ongoing histologic projects * Organize and label blocks and slides * Maintain various laboratory logs and records * Dispose of hazardous chemical wastes per regulatory guidelines * Comply with all state and federal regulations as well as company and departmental rules, policies and procedural manuals * Respect the privacy of the personal information of patients, co-workers, and all individuals with whom the Company interacts * Ensure compliance with all laws and regulations applicable to the Company and its operations Education and/or Experience Requirements: * High school diploma or GED required * Certification as Histology Technician or eligible for Board of Certification (BOC) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) preferred * Minimum of ten year experience as a Histology Technician with competency in the areas of embedding, microtomy, and special stains is required; knowledge of and/or experience with immunohistochemistry and cryosectioning procedures is preferred. * Keen attention to detail * Team-player attitude * Excellent computer skills, including familiarity with Word and Excel preferred * Excellent verbal and written communication skills Work Environment and Physical Requirements (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions): * This job is performed in a laboratory environment. The majority of the work day is spent either sitting or standing. A variety of laboratory equipment is used, primarily a Microtome, Autostainer and Cover Slipper. The equipment used may be noisy at times. Work requires the ability to see and handle objects on a repetitive basis. Work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals, including formalin, and may rarely involve contact with infectious diseases. The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including lab coats, safety glasses and gloves may be required when performing certain operations. Duties require the ability to communicate clearly with internal or external contacts, either verbally or in writing.
