Works with the Administrator and Chief Clinical Officer to develop and maintain standards of medical and nursing services and its documentation according to the general administrative policies of the Home and the Code of the Department of Health. Achieves objectives according to the policies of the Home and in compliance with the federal, state and local Departments of Health by directing the administration of nursing services to the residents. Plans, organizes and directs effective administration of nursing units. Supervises members of staff and collaborates with them to carry out the tasks and duties commensurate with good nursing policies and procedures. Delegates to members of staff specific responsibilities for efficient execution of these tasks and duties. * Develops and maintains philosophy, nursing service objectives, nursing procedures and policies that enhance high standards of gerontological nursing practice. * Develops and maintains objectives, standards, policies and procedures pertaining to the medical and nursing care of the resident and documentation of same in his/her medical record. * Determines the kind and amount of nursing care needed by residents on a 24 hour-a-day basis to assure appropriate coverage. Recommends to administration the number and levels of nursing personnel to be employed. * Participates in the selection and termination of employment of professional and non-professional staff in the Nursing Department. * Acts in consultation with other resident care services, including Medical, Pharmacy, Lab, X-Ray, Rehabilitation, Medical Records, Social Services, Recreation Therapy, Dietary and Central Supply. Insures availability of and determines need for nursing equipment and supplies. * Reviews and acts upon the nursing reports of inspecting agencies. * Maintains open relationships with residents, families, physicians and community. * Informs the Administrator of activities and special problems related to nursing care of residents. * Investigates and studies new trends and developments in nursing practice to insure up-to-date care for residents. * Conducts nursing audits and analyzes nursing and ancillary services to improve the quality of resident care and to obtain maximum utilization of staff time and abilities. * Member of all committees concerned with residents. * Assists in the planning and supervision of orientation and in-service education for Nursing Department employees. * Plans, develops, organizes and implements departmental goals and objectives. * Exhibits creativity and initiative in pursing organizational and departmental goals and objectives. * Develops, revises and interprets departmental policies. * Develops and controls budgeted expenses. * Conducts staff meetings and meets with members of other departments to coordinate activities with those of other departments. * Submits appropriate report as required. * Communicates effectively on all levels both orally and in writing. * Analyzes, evaluates and solves inter and interdepartmental problems. * Maintains and assures Quality Assurance programs effectiveness. * Insures all code and regulatory requirements are met. * Establishes standards and work procedures for the nursing staff in accordance with the established policies of the home. * Functions as acting Administrator in absence of Administrator and Assistant Administrator and Associate Administrator. Education Requirements * Graduate of an approved school of nursing. Education Desired * A Bachelor's Degree is preferred. Experience Requirements * A minimum of 5 years of supervisory nursing experience. License Requirements * Registered Professional Nurse in New York State Skill Requirements * Judgment and problem solving required majority of time.
