Our goal is to protect our client's legal rights and advocate for their best interests to ensure that they have permanent, safe and stable homes.Child Advocate Attorneys are responsible for the management of large caseloads, file maintenance, administrative and procedural elements including the preparation and filing of court pleadings and motions. Under the supervision and direction of supervising attorneys, they investigate abuse allegations and prepare cases for court. This includes field interviews with child-clients and other relevant persons, conducting home assessments; visits to foster and group homes, institutional and detention placements; review of all related legal, medical, therapeutic, placement, biographical and informational documents; as well as subpoenaing relevant persons and documents for trial. Child Advocate Attorneys participate in the litigation process by examining witnesses, submitting evidence and making independent recommendations to the Court regarding dependency, custody and permanency planning. Child Advocate Attorneys monitor cases as long as child-clients remain in care to ensure that the resources provided address the needs of the child. The ultimate role of the Child Advocate Attorney is to advocate for a permanent and safe home for every client.Imagine yourself in this role...As a Child Advocate Attorney, you will be instrumental in promoting good government in DeKalb County by:Leading and coordinating daily work activities of small unit of attorneys or trial team; trains and instructs lower-level attorneys and interns; provides guidance and oversight to attorneys, investigators, and legal support staff; and advises staff regarding complexproblem situations.Conducting initial case evaluations as assigned; reviews case file and analyzes the facts and evidence of the case; may assess client eligibility and needs; reviews criminal histories; determines appropriateness of diversion, dismissal, or charges; reviews accuracy of jurisdiction, venue, and scope of arrest powers; ensures sufficient probable cause; prepares or reviews charges and discovery; and prepares for vestigating, analyzing, and preparing assigned cases for hearings and trials; may interview clients in and out of custody; requests and inspects records and evidence; prepares graphics and exhibits; makes investigative requests and follows up on leads; obtains and reviews scientific results and analysis; identifies and interviews witnesses and alibis; observes crime scenes; subpoenas witnesses and prepares them for trial; prepares clients for trial; determines need for, procures, and interviews expert witnesses; assesses need for psychologicalpsychiatric evaluation of client; anticipates legal issues; assists in the development of case strategies; and presents cases to superiors.Representing assigned clients or State of Georgia at arraignments, preliminary and pre-trial hearings and conferences, motion hearings, jury and bench trials, probation and sentencing, post-adjudicationpost-conviction hearings, alternative and diversion programs, specialty courts, or any related courtroom proceedings; prepares and argues motions and evidence; negotiates and presents plea resolutions; negotiates at all stages on behalf of the client or State of Georgia; advises clients or victims regarding the acceptance or rejection of plea offers; selects juries; prepares and makes opening and closing statements; presents evidence; questions witnesses; and makes bondsentencing municating with and serves as a liaison to clients, victims, families, witnesses, andor community partners; develops attorney-client relationship; provides information and updates regarding case status; makes appropriate referrals; requests victim advocates and assists them as needed; and explains and advises regarding the investigative and judicial process.Are you the ONE?We are looking for a strong candidate with a passion for serving our community!To be minimally qualified, you must have a Juris Doctorate Degree required; five years of experience practicing law in area of assignment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.Rewards of working with DeKalb CountyIn addition to gratifying work as a public servant, DeKalb County offers a highly competitive total rewards package.
