Job Overview:Launched by Vietnamese American Initiative for Development (VietAID) and Greater Boston Legal Services' Asian Outreach Center (AOC), the Massachusetts Nail Salon Project seeks a Nail Salon Project FellowOrganizer to provide case support and organize workers to address workplace challenges and economic instability in the nail salon industry.  The Nail Salon Project Organizing Fellow will work in partnership with AOC to support immigrant workers in the Greater Boston area. The Fellow will have an opportunity to provide case support for workers on a range of issues, including access to public benefits, wage disputes and misclassification, workplace health and safety, and housing stability. The Fellow will also conduct outreach and training to empower and organize workers around policy and advocacy goals that will improve workplace conditions and wages for all in the nail salon industry. The Fellow will also engage in organizing and legislative advocacy for the creation of an advisory board to build worker empowerment and strive for sustainability within the nail salon industry. This is a temporary part-time, non-exempt position. VietAID was founded in 1994 by community leaders and residents who believed that a community development corporation would provide comprehensive economic development programs and services to alleviate poverty and advance civic participation in the Fields Corner Vietnamese community of Dorchester. VietAID's programs include an accredited bilingual pre-school, out of school time youth development, drop in day program for older adults and affordable housing creation and preservation. VietAID manages a growing portfolio of deeply affordable housing units across Fields Corner and Dorchester. VietAID developed and operates the Vietnamese American Community Center (VACC). VACC serves as a place for the community to come together and take part in or learn about programs that can help them improve their health, education, financial well-being, and more. VietAID is just one of several community organizations that operates out of the VACC. On any given day, as many as 200 children, youth, and adults access services in the building. Responsibilities and Duties: Provide direct case support on a range of issues identified by client need;Conduct regular community-based and virtual intake and outreach to workers;Educate workers and small businesses on how to build their knowledge and skills on health, safety and workplace rights;Handle referrals to community-based partners;Identify and support opportunities for leadership development for workers and small businesses to become involved with the Nail Salon Project;Collaborate with local and national community partners to advocate on behalf of workers, which may include meeting with community groups, state agencies, and government stakeholders; Develop and maintain relationships with community-based organizations, labor unions, and other allies to support worker-led, social justice campaigns and advocacy projects; andOrganize workers and small businesses on policies that will improve minimum industry standards and practices.  Preferred Qualifications and Skills: We will consider candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below. Commitment to public interest and interest in base-building in the Asian American community; Prior experience in outreach and community engagement or willingness to learn; Prior experience or interest in organizing in Asian American communities along with familiarity with Asian American community issues and communities, and solidarity with other BIPOC communities;Strong team player with a positive attitude; should be able to complete tasks following guidance on the basics, solve problems independently;Strong verbal and written communication skills;Ability to interact positively with people of all racial, ethnic and economic backgrounds, including members of our community, our staff, and outside stakeholders;Motivated to learn and take on training opportunities for skill further development;Strong commitment to racial and economic justice; readily applies racialeconomic equity lenses to workers right;Flexibility to attend some weekend or night community meetings or events as needed; and Familiarity with Vietnamese language and culture is a plus, but not required.Location: VietAID is located at 42 Charles Street, Suite E, Dorchester MA 02122. This position has flexibility for remote as appropriate.  Compensation: The salary is paid hourly, with a rate of $20 - $24 hour.
