At SCAD, bright new talents in jewelry refine their design skills, define their unique artistic voices, and position themselves to thrive in a multi-billion-dollar industry that fuses cultural and commercial relevance. As a hands-on professor of jewelry, you will teach within a 13,800-square-foot studio environment outfitted with leading-edge technology, including two laser welders, an induction casting machine, two Orion arc welding systems, a BB70 engraver, a microscope system, dual handpiece micro-motor systems, Roland JWX-10 milling machines, GraverSmith with air compressor system, and Wacom Cintiq tablets.With SCAD's career-focused jewelry curriculum, students stay at the forefront of technological advancement as faculty guide them with an experimental approach to precious works of great complexity. As a member of this faculty, you will meet teaching responsibilities and expectations as outlined in the SCAD Faculty Handbook. For example planning and preparation for teaching; maintaining an active and engaged classroom environment; syllabus design, submission, and approval; holding office hours and midterm grade reviews to provide feedback to students; being available to students outside of regular class hours through extra help sessions, extended learning opportunities, and study (field) trips; and conducting course- and program-level this role, you are also required to meet professional responsibilities and expectations, such as modeling professionalism; fulfilling grading and academic documentation requirements; recording attendance; following academic policies and regulations; and supporting academic assessment and institutional effectiveness efforts.You must be available to attend on-ground and virtual events, from the popular annual Jewelry Trunk Show to invitation-only activations at New York City Jewelry Week, the Smithsonian Craft Show, the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Art Craft Show, and more, to develop a devoted following of collectors for your jewelry students' work well before graduation. You will also attend faculty councils, admission events, curriculum assessment and development, institutional effectiveness and accreditation support, or other publicity assignments.Minimum QualificationsTerminal degree or its equivalent in the discipline or in a relevant fieldAcademic and professional credentials to teachKnowledge of or experience in the multi-faceted jewelry industry, both artstudio and commercialExcellent technical skills in jewelry-making and metalsmithing (i.e., advanced fabrication, stone-setting, casting, and finishing)Proficiency in Rhinoceros, MatrixGold, Zbrush, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Sketchbook, and other prototyping toolsStrong understanding of design principles, color theory, hand sketches, and other fundamentals of designPreferred QualificationsTeaching experience at the collegiate levelTravel required: Less than 10%Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday.
