Job Description:

This role is responsible for facilitating a safety culture and business model for all Sterling Foods locations, accomplished through partnership with supervisors and managers, and to include execution of safety initiatives, training, behavioral safety programs, legal compliance, employee accountability, and accident investigations, as well as develop and facilitate initiatives to prevent accidentsinjuries in the work place. This role is a consultative partner.Essential Functions:Partner with Manufacturing Plants to create a zero accident safety culture through associate engagement, empowerment and ownership, accountability, active safety committees and training, with the ultimate goal of preventing all accidents.Develop ongoing processes, and work with plant leadership teams to implement them, in order to prevent accidents and eliminate worker's compensation expense to the lowest possible levels.Develop and maintain safety metrics to facilitate continuous improvement in safety performance, utilizing tools such as root cause analysis and best practices sharing.Develop, implement and sustain a behavioral corporate safety process to capture leading indicators, identify trends, create accountability for safety at the individual employee level, and facilitate outstanding safety performance.Oversee and enforce compliance with all OSHA regulations pertaining to company operations while maintaining awareness of OSHA amendments and making recommendations for their implementation.Conduct annual facility audits with Workers Compensation and general liability carrier(s).Follow up and complete items documented during audits.Coordinate with brokers and workers compensation carrier on claims.Create and maintain health and safety manuals, as well as keep same current and up to date.Review and revise California IIPP and Earthquake Response Plans, as needed.Maintain Safety Data Sheets throughout the plant.Conduct OSHA required training, and ensures California facilities are compliant with OSHA and CalOSHA training requirements.Minimize and track workers' compensation expense through RTW programs, claims review, accident investigation, etc. The focus of this position is on safety, accident elimination and loss prevention.Plan andor deliver programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices. This would include the development of a plant to plant safety alert program.Supervise and communicate with contracted security staff, and review security issues with plant personnel.Assist supervisors in completing accident reports on all injuries.Monitor employees on light duty, in conjunction with employee's immediate supervisor.Provide first aid as needed.Conduct safety orientations for all new hires; also forklift and pallet jack certifications; evaluate forklift and pallet jack operations.Maintain all safety related documentation per federal retention requirements and in a manner that is organized, understandable and useable; to include updating the Safety Manual as needed.Ensure safety committees at all locations are in place and effectively incorporating procedures and practices; ensure regular communication with members.Maintain OSHA 300 log (3 locations)Non-Essential Functions:Respond to employees' safety concernsConduct safety inspections as needed.Respond to fires and other emergencies.Coordinate registration and removal of hazardous waste.Arrange for OSHA testing and evaluations by external agenciesconsultants as needed.Act as the onsite emergency coordinator.Coordinate with municipal and state emergency planners; updated relevant plans, lead exercises and evaluate procedures.Order safety and non-safety items for Maintenance and Production departments (i.e. Heat Resistant Gloves, Ear Protection, Cut Resistant Gloves)Organizeschedule annual health fair and flu vaccinationsReport metrics to Plant Manager (frequency to be determined)Maintain electronic billboard with weekly safety updates.Other duties as assigned.Qualifications (Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):Food or regulated manufacturing experience highly desirable.Knowledge of OSHA, DOT and EPA regulations preferred.Experience developing safety programs and successful implementation of prehensive background leading and influencing others, reinforced by an exceptional ability to establish rapport with business partners, gain employee trust, and build strong relationships.Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement corrective measures through supervisors and management.Must be self-motivated and motivate others to achieve desired results.Demonstrated ability to work with and through others, using influence and diplomacy.Possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral.Ability to deal with ambiguity, change and a dynamic business environment.Ability to understand business implications and deliver results.Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks and projects at one time.Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.Valid driver's license and insurable driving record.Education & Experience:Bachelor's Degree in relevant field (Business, Operations Management, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, etc.).Minimum of 5 years Safety Management experience.Experience working in consumer packaged goods or related industry preferred.Minimum of 10 years work experience including a leadership role with demonstrated success.Physical Demands:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
