The role entails working collaboratively and cross-functionally with a multi-disciplinary team of Photonics, CMOS, Electronics, Firmware, and Systems engineers.Analog Photonics' proprietary laser systems are designed to meet the challenging requirements of LiDAR: rapid wavelength tuning over a wide wavelength range, very narrow linewidth, precise radio-frequency modulation, and compact size.The Laser Team is responsible for all aspects of the operation of the current laser design, as well as designing the next generation of devices. This is a great opportunity for anyone with the requisite background who wants to gain experience in product design, prototyping, and manufacturing.Laser Team Responsibilities· Work in the lab to calibrate packaged lasers and integrate them into Lidar systems· Numerical modeling of III-V quantum well epistructure designs and development of appropriate waveguide structures.· Simulation and design of semiconductor lasers, including optical, electrical, and thermal performance.· Development of novel semiconductor laser materials and designs.· Developing laser control algorithms and characterizing performance.· Development of appropriate test plans in coordination with our in-house test engineers.· Design and execute experiments to characterize and optimize laser performance· Integrate into the Analog Photonics workflow, which includes Lumerical, Cadence, Photon Design (Harold), COMSOL, etc.· Communicate with foundries to develop manufacturable photonic devices· Interface with packaging service suppliers and communicate technical requirements· Generate reports for internal deliverables and external customer interactions· Execute current and new projects from start to finish· Contribute technically to new funding opportunitiesRequired Qualifications· PhD degree in physics, electrical engineering, optical engineering, or equivalent, OR master's degree and 3 years postgraduate work experience.· Experience with integrated photonics design andor development.· Experience with semiconductor laser simulations and analysis, including optical gain and loss, electrical carriers, waveguide design, etc.· Familiarity with laser fabrication and testing.· Experience with III-V laser epitaxy design is highly desired.· Familiarity with DFB, DBR, and tunable laser design is preferred.· Familiarity with silicon photonics external laser cavity design is preferred.· Experience implementing laser feedback control systems such as PDH locking is preferred.Desired Qualifications· Deep and comprehensive understanding of laser physics· Digital Control Systems· Chip-Scale Optoelectronics Packaging· III-V Gain material design· Mask layout and taping out photonic devices in a foundry setting· Experience with qualification process for automotive or industrial parts· Control and automation of lab equipment
