Job Description:

Position PurposeThe Laboratory Services position is responsible for the evaluation and processing of donated ocular tissue for transplantation. This position prepares workstations for lamellar preparations, and post-processing workstations, performs cleaning and sterilization of instruments, evaluates eye tissue, and processes eye tissue which includes but is not limited to DSAEK, DMEK, PDEK and ALK. This position works a rotating schedule ensuring adequate coverage in the Laboratory. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPrepare instrument kits for sterilizationSterilize instrumentationCirculate in the lab in support of the processing of corneal tissue for lamellar preparations DSAEK, DMEK, PDEK, and ALKUse independent judgment to perform corneal evaluation via specular, slit lamp and black light microscopy, and OCTComplete required documentation and perform data entry following LWVI policies and proceduresPerform lamellar-tissues processing including DSAEK, DMEK, PDEK and ALK. Expertise is shown in processing lamellar grafts and performs the most advanced processing types.Perform sterile tissue processing for cornea and scleral grafts.Perform all functions in adherence to LWVI policies and procedures.Ensures compliance at all times with FDA, EBAA, and the state and federal regulatory agenciesPerform laboratory maintenance following LWVI policiesAssist with packaging, shipping, and receiving as neededAssist with training of Laboratory Specialist I and Laboratory Specialist II as neededPerform other duties as requested by managementEducation and ExperienceBachelor's degree preferredPrevious experience in Eye Banking in a lab setting requiredKnowledge of ocular anatomy, physiology, and disease processes preferredCertificationsCertified as an Eye Bank Technician desired; must attain within two years of employmentKnowledge, Skills, & AbilitiesDemonstrate exceptional customer service, attention to detail, and multitasking skillsAbility to interact with co-workers within and outside of the departmentAbility to effectively prioritize shift activitiesKnowledge of the principles of microbiology, and sterileaseptic technique as it relates to eye bankingExcellent communication skillsAbility to work independently as well as a member of a teamProficient in Microsoft Office Suite of Products; ie Word, PowerPoint, Excel, MS Project, etc.Knowledge of medical and ophthalmic terminologyBe a self-starter and perform work independentlyMust have or obtain a Hepatitis B vaccinationAbility to work weekends, evenings, and or holidays as requiredAbility to accept guidanceRelocation will be offered.Work EnvironmentThe work environment described here is representative of those employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.
