Job Description:

Scientist Senior Scientist, Protein EngineerFull-time positionCompetitive compensation (Salary, Benefits & Options)180 Varick Street, New York, NYWaypoint Bio is a venture-backed biotech startup building the next generation of cell therapies for solid tumors and autoimmune diseases. Traditional cell therapy development faces a trade-off between in vitro approaches that are fast but inaccurate, and in vivo approaches that are accurate but slow and expensive. Waypoint is pioneering high throughput in vivo testing of novel cell therapy designs. Using our proprietary platform combining spatial biology, pooled screening, in silico protein engineering, and machine learning, we can obtain both depth and breadth when screening cell therapy candidates - speed without compromising on in vivo accuracy. Our team is highly collaborative, interdisciplinary, and shares the mission of bringing the promise of immune cell therapy to all cancer patients.Position Summary:We are seeking a highly motivated, creative scientist who thrives in a fast-paced and collaborative environment. The ideal candidate will have extensive expertise in either protein engineering & synthetic biology, or cell therapy design. Their primary tasks will be to design novel immune-modulating proteins, and to test their function using high-throughput in vitro & in vivo assays. Successful candidates will have deep knowledge of protein design, immunology, or cell therapy, and will be able to incorporate in silico approaches to predict optimal protein sequences. In this role, you will work collaboratively with our team of computational and wet-lab scientists to develop cutting-edge technologies and new therapeutic options for patients.Duties and ResponsibilitiesGenerate thousands of innovative designs for protein therapies and cell therapies, with the goal of improving immune-modifying therapeutics. These designs will include novel sequence modifications to cytokines, antibodies, Chimeric Antigen Receptors (CARs), and transmembrane proteins.Apply your knowledge of immune-related signaling pathways & protein domains to improve the efficacy of existing protein & cell therapies.Develop high-throughput in vitro approaches to evaluate these therapeutic agents for desired biochemical, cellular, and functional properties.Design libraries of novel proteins and test them using Waypoint's high-throughput in vivo screening corporate machine-learning and other in silico approaches to predict functional variants of human proteins.Implement strategies for highly multiplexed cloning.Actively engage in prioritizing key milestones and developing appropriate timelines.Provide conceptual input on experimental design and interpretation in a team setting.Required QualificationsPh.D. in Biochemistry, Immunology, Synthetic Biology, Protein Design, Cell Biology, or a related field.4+ years of academic or industry experience working in protein engineering & design, cell therapy, or synthetic biology.Experience in designing, testing, and evaluating protein-based therapies or cell therapies using in vitro or in vivo approaches.Familiarity with machine learning & in silico approaches to protein design.Knowledge of the interplay between the immune system and the tumor microenvironment. An excellent scientific track record with published papers or recent experience in the cell therapy field.Superb written and oral communication skills, and the organizational abilities to pursue several projects on tight timelines.Preferred QualificationsDeep expertise developing novel computational tools to build protein libraries that optimize for a specific property (e.g. protein folding, solubility, biochemical activity, etc.)Experience with highly multiplexed cloning and library screening to identify protein variants with specific properties.Send CV and cover letter to apply:
