Must be competent with assessing all material with a high level of accuracy. Must show good judgement with attention to details as well as respect for patient confidentiality. The cytotechnologist must work professionally and courteously with physicians, patients, guests and other employees.Responsibilities Performs processing, staining and coverslipping of various types of cytologic material. Assists with fine needle aspiration immediate evaluation and procurement. Performs clerical duties including entering data into computers, answering phones, and distribution of reports. Maintains cytology schedule and delegates tasks as needed. Works with others in a professional and courteous manner. Assists with training and teaching of students, residents, and others. Completely and correctly screens and interprets cytologic specimens. Assess proficiency of other cytotechnologists, identifies areas which need improvement and provides feedback. Ensures that performance standards are met. Maintains and updates departmental policies. Maintains proficiency testing and regulatory compliance. Maintains department quality data and reports any outliers. Performs other duties as assigned. QualificationsEducation / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):Must fulfill one of the following requirements: Must be a graduate of an accredited school of cytotechnology. Prior to 9/1/1992 completed 2 years in an accredited institution and 12 months of formal cytology training from an approved school of cytotechnology. Prior to 9/1/1992 achieved a satisfactory grade in an HHS proficiency test for cytotechnologists. Prior to 9/1/1994 have 2 years' full time experience or equivalent within the preceding 5 years examining slides under the supervision of a physician certified in pathology. Also 6 months' cytology training and 2 years of supervised full time experience in cytology. Graduate of accredited school of cytotechnology and bachelor's degree preferred.Cytology certification or eligible by an approved HHS agency (ASCP or IAC).Individuals who are ASCP certified beginning January 2004 must participate in the BOR Certification Maintenance Program.Experience (required and preferred):5 years preferred but not mandatory.
